We are thinking of buying a retirement home in Northeastern Penn....and have read a bit about Jim Thorpe and Milford.... We are interested in a few acres, NOT suburban area, near a town with good restaurants, culture....and reasonable driving distance to NYC. Any thoughts on the significant differences between the two above and any others we may not know about? We do not know the area well...and are moving here to be nearer to family.

I would have to say that Milford is probably more stable, economically than Jim Thorpe. Jim Thorpe is undergoing a revival, and has lot's of tourism. New restaurants, etc. You can probably get more for your money in the Jim Thorpe area, but values are lower than Milford. Some of the outer lying areas of can be a real throw back in time. Visit Nesquehoning, Coaldale, Tamaqua, St. Clair, to get a flair for the area. St Clair has allot of history, as does the whole area.

Both are relatively the same distance from NYC. Both are beautiful areas. If you are used to a Jersey life style with public services, Milford is probably closest to your liking. Visit both.
