we loved the area but we realized most of the things we would want in retirement were just lacking .

no public transportation if we couldn't drive

few specialists in the area

limited choice in medical facility's and specialists

long cold winters with little to do

after a while even finding things to do involved leaving the area and far drives .

if i wanted to work a bit there was little i could do to earn some decent money .

we realized everything we would want is right here in queens and Manhattan .

we have endless things to do daily now that we retired .

the irony is now we have 3 grand children and our kids are going boy we wish you still had the house in nepa . when we had the house we had no grand kids and our kids came up maybe 3 times a year .

I will take boring over the city life any day!

I personally am happy here - I do want to leave the area eventually but only because I want to be closer to my family in Seattle. And I want milder winters. LOL
i noticed that too. the locals don't really have much .

one of the best things about living in a high cost area is they are high cost for a reason . people want to live in the tristate area because that is where the higher paying jobs are .

so the end result is at the end of the day those of us in high cost areas tend to end up with homes that sell for a crap load of money . then these folks relocate to cheapsville and live like kings .

those who live in cheapsville never end up in the same financial shape as those coming from much more costly areas .

we just had a survey show 400,000 baby boomers and millenials in long island plan to sell their small mega buck homes and relocate to cheaper areas and have quite a bit of dough to live on .

And I would absolutely HATE living in the city. Hate, hate, hate it! I don't want to hear traffic, I want quiet. I grew up never having public transportation - that's going to be ANYWHERE outside of the city, not just Hawley. I love the outdoors, so what I like to do (hike, ride my bike, kayak, take my dog for a walk, etc) is all right outside my door and it's FREE. Long cold winters - snowshoeing is something I plan on trying this year ...we have thousands of acres of state forest to do that in... and reading books on the sofa under a blanket with a glass of wine (when I'm not working)...ice fishing is an option for those nuts who like to do that.

It's not the city. Thank God.

Having a lot of "dough" is not my ultimate goal. Being satisfied and comfortable in my life - that is my goal. And I've always learned to be content with what a lot of others would consider very little.

well not every area is like that . we are in an area of queens called bay terrace . we are 17 minutes from manhattan .

but our area is quiet and all residential . our kids are in westchester , 20 minutes from us and it is very country like . extremely expensive but very very nice .

i don't think i would enjoy being a local in nepa and not have at least the money to eat out whenever we wanted and take our trips and do all the things we enjoy doing .

we would have found doing all the things we like tough had i been employed in nepa .

Nope...unless there are thousands of acres of forest all around, and unless bear, turkey, fox, and deer are common sights, it's not "country" to me! LOL

The current owner of record is still The Dime Bank, with a recording date of 02/06/15. It really is a shame - from what I was told the entire facility was in major major disrepair. So sad.
