Looking for any info you guys may have about the abandoned community by the Tom Ridge Pavillion in Bushkill. I ventured in there last week just to see what was there and it peaked my interests. Strangly most locals I spoke with in Bushkill don't know much about it. Not much info about it online. Looks very creepy an an awesome place to explore. Hope you guys can help....

This belonged to the failed "Mountain Laurel Arts Center," one of the manifestations of the "arts center" fad prevalent in the '90s. The state taxpayers mostly paid for this. Tom Ridge, who ran for PA governor on a platform of "initiative and referendum" and then reneged on both promises is the responsible party. When the citizens of Pittsburgh rejected a big bond issue for the construction of new baseball and football stadiums, Ridge went around the people and got the state legislature to authorize funding.

But in order to get this legislation passed, it was necessary to also include funding for all kinds of sports and "art center" projects throughout the state. This is how the corrupt political class operates.

But I am talking about the development next to it. I have found out it has been abandoned since 1990. It was a garment workers union resort. Stars use to play in the white building in the center of the development. The lake is still beautiful and there is an old restaurant by the lake. Very few people in the area know much about this place its like a mystery. Very cool in there I ventured in a few weeks ago looks like Chernobyl like the people just left and its lost in time... I was told Wayne Newton once owned the property but never did anything with it... Would love to know more

Sarge, just Google Unity House in the Poconos and you'll find quite a bit about this former getaway for members of the International Ladies' Garment Workers Union.

I got quite a chuckle out of the group of members who named their cabin The Cloisters, because it was clois ter the dance pavilion, clois ter the dining hall, clois ter the lake. lol

Back in the 1960's I had one job as a salesman for a bedding company that went after the resorts and camps in our area. I had pulled in the Unity House at the wrong time. I was greeted with many guards armed with machine guns. It must have been a very important union meeting or many VIP's. But I figured it was best to give them some distance.
