I have about five eight foot Black Walnut sections that I would love to have cut at a saw mill. But none of the local mills want to mill these logs. I am hoping to find possibly one of the portable mills that do 'small' jobs. The logs are anywhere from one foot in diameter to about 18 inches. If anybody knows of one of these mills that is open for business; please let me know (especially in Monroe County). Thank you!

If there are any Amish (or maybe Mennonite) locally, you might ask them.

I could look around locally if you'd bring them this far.

I am hoping to find something closer. I do appreciate your help. But, hopefully, somebody will have closer suggestions. If not; then I will have to haul them further. I guess, what I am saying, is to not go out of your way until we see if I get anymore responses.

Thank you!

I did have one large cherry milled several years ago; but the mill owner died.

They don't want to touch it because it's usually from a yard, nails and whatever.

Some have nail detectors. This is from the back of large field and I did not encounter any metal when I cut it up - but I am not making long cuts like a sawmill. My feeling was that the wood is clean.

Black walnut will make some nice pieces of lumber..do you have a specific project in mind for the boards?
Just curious....I guess 'nosy' would be a better word.

Not really. I was thinking that some I would have cut at 1" think and some at 1 and a half to 2" thick. I do have a 13" planer. However, depending on what the boards look like; we might just take them to one Mennonite carpenter down by Ephrata, PA.

Several years ago we had one black cherry tree that had a bad trunk and I cut it down. We took pictures of the tree while standing and pictures of it while I cut it up. Then I had one of the portable sawmills come to our property and cut it up - I also took pictures of them cutting into lumber. Then we took the lumber to the Mennonite carpenter and he made a corner cupboard, tables and kitchen table for us. The pictures we taped to the bottom of the furniture. So we have furniture with it's own history, from tree to table or cupboard. Anyway; we thought that it made the pieces unique.

I don't think we would do the same with the black walnut; it was my parent's tree and not our and had fallen in a wind storm.
