Thank you for all the opinions. At this stage of our lives, we aren't out to make a huge fortune. We just want to be comfortable and work daily.

Good luck to him! Hope it works out.

I don't think we would go back to Long Island. He has worked there for a few months and really hates the crowds, the traffic and the attitude. I do miss my friends there and have a long history with them. It is very difficult to make friends here at our age, and it seems very parochial sometimes.

The money is very good in NY and we also miss that. It seemed that we always had some dollars in our pockets.

Pittsburgh is a great city for schools, and I have always had a job here ; but then I do admin so its always easy to get jobs, even if they don't pay a fortune. My job here is great, flexible and the people respect me. It pays decent.
My dh wasn't as lucky. Actually, last night the company in Pittsburgh called him to say they had more work at least until December and was he interested. But scranton gave him a better feel that he would have full-time work. We are just influx at the moment wondering what to do. No matter what, i will stay here in Pittsburgh until the boys finish school and head out to the world.

good luck , that must be a miserable feeling to have to split up the family like that . scranton is pretty far from pittsburg .

so far we don't regret staying in queens at all . yeah it is costlier but there is so much in place here that is a plus for retirement and aging .

a great public transportation system for one thing in case we can't drive . we have the finest medical facility's , specialists and hospitals as well as just endless things to do . if i want to work a little i can make in one day what it would take 40 hours in nepa to earn .

in fact i do technical training 2 days a month for my old company .

Its about a 5 hours drive. I hear what you are saying about Nepa, but we tried to sell the house, and couldn't so we are still paying for it. So he may as well live there and at least use it. We are still about 10 years away from retiring at least, and have to get two kids thru college ; yes, they will be paying for most of it themselves, but we still will need to provide for them. One joined the national guard and is off to boot camp this summer, then he can start college next year. The other would love to do international business, so he will have to go to a decent college for that. The house in Pittsburgh is more or less paid for, so by selling it, we can pay off neap house.
We have been thru much worse than this. Cancer, preemie baby etc. This is just a side track for us. We both are of the opinion, whatever it takes.

He needs to go where the work is full time.

Oh, you're not going. Well, that can work. My husband was career military, so I saw plenty of that. He never had any long deployments, but it seemed that he was gone every time something broke. He probably thought there was some sort of conspiracy going on. LOL
