The mother of a close friend of mine, who is housebound and recently turned age 80, decided to re-register and apply for an absentee ballot. She completed the paperwork and returned it in late September, well ahead of any deadline. Sometime around October 20, she received two voter ID's, but they didn't quite match, and a call to the county Voter Registration Office promised that an absentee ballot would still be forthcoming. As of this morning (November 2) that ballot had still failed to arrive; (in comparison, an absentee ballot I filed for in 1996 was mailed and returned no later than a day or two after Labor Day.)

A few local inquiries among friends determined that we're not quite alone in this situation; We'd like to hear from anyone else in Luzerne County who might have experienced this.

Well, the plot thickens.

The absentee ballot arrived in the mail this morning (November 3), but with a warning that it must be delivered to the County Board of Elections in Wilkes-Barre, 29 miles away, no later than 5 PM tomorrow afternoon. That means I'll have to deliver it in person tomorrow, and since 'Mom' can't travel, I'll have to hope that no one asks for a notarized statement. I've been told (by the functionaries) that that won't be necessary, but frankly, I trust Luzerne County's "Court House gang" about as far as I can pick up and throw the Court House itself.

I'm also pursuing attention via the Press/Enterprise (local daily newspaper), am hoping for some local coverage from WNEP, and have referred the story to a friend who ran twice for the State Legislature as a third-party candidate. This one isn't going down without a fight.

I would suggest it's probably a case of mismanagement. They have had a lot of issues since that person who was running elections forever retired/was ousted. I forget his name or the reason he left. Kevin something?

coalman, Kevin Jordan was fired in 2001. Len Piazza took over the office but he was fired in 2004. I think Tom Pizano was next but I don't know if he's still in or not. Politics as usual.
