Well, we closed on our house in Dallas this Saturday. Everything went smoothly!! We're not actually moving ourselves or our furniture in until April 22nd, but in the meantime we have some work to do. We need a wall taken down and need a good GC. Unfortunately, I can't rely on referrals from people i know in the area because well, I only know one person in the area and she's never needed one!

How does one even go about finding a reputable contractor with a good record? Does anyone here have any recommendations?

On a related note, anyone know of any hardware stores in the Dallas area? We want to support our local small businesses, rather than hitting up Home Depot and Lowes, if we could. I meant to explore the area more this weekend, but spent most of it tearing down wallpaper (by the way, anyone thinking of putting wallpaper up....please don't. It's EVIL!!! ).

That is so funny. I am glad you got the wallpaper down. I am sorry I can't help you because I don't live in the area at least yet but when I saw your evil wallpaper post I had to laugh because I am house hunting too.

I believe my former classmate's father is the Mr. Carey you reference. If we're thinking of the same Carey that built a number of the homes in Highland Hills, then I agree that he does nice work. We also used Advanced Builders out of Pittston Township to renovate our formerly retro-themed kitchen into a Mediterranean showplace, and we have been very pleased with the craftmanship.

You should check the Pennsylvania Builder's Association website. There are links to each county's builder's association and a list of contractors that are members. Also, most local chambers of commerce also will have a list of local businesses that are reputable members. You will probably find alot of useful information on the chamber of commerce website if you're new to the area also. The most important thing is to ask the contractors for references and make sure you check them before signing a contract.

Thanks for the tips, and thanks to everyone else for your recommendations/suggestions
