They should look at the distances they have to travel to shop, get to entertainment, schools or whatever their needs.

You expend an lot of money and energy to move anyplace. Knowing your true expectations can help you make the right choice. To some degree it is still luck of the draw. It only takes one bad neighbor to spoil anybody's moving experience. It's hard to keep everybody happy all the time.

Why don't the two of you take this outside. Mr.Retired asked a question which neither of you have answered.

Actually I've found their dialogue rather interesting.

The OP asked about Pennsylvania, not just the Poconos. There's more to PA than that one small area just like there's more to NYS than NYC. To respond the his question, I like living in PA mostly because it's affordable and beautiful.

but then the question is under the NE PA forum.

Actually I did answer the OP's question in my first response.

While some hate our area; many love our area. Much of this love/hate depends on exactly where you are located and where you have to go. If you have to deal with traffic/construction everyday; many will not be happy. If you can get to where you want to go and have everything you always wanted; you are going to be happy. We always enjoyed the simple pleasures of looking out the window and seeing a doe bedded down on our lawn with one or two fawns along side of her. It never took a lot to keep us happy.

i love fishing and hunting so that is why we originality bought . but over time that walk around the lake or in the woods grew stale and i became less and less amused with the fishing and hunting .

today being retired , no matter what the weather there are always things to do and places to go .

we are about 30 minutes by train to manhattan and have the run of long island and westchester . there is never a day we wake up and are at a loss for something to do and that is extremely important .

of course the other major point is now we have 5 grand kids , when we bought we had none . everyone is local and we see them all the time .

so our priorities definitely shifted over time

I am happy that you are happy with your area; but why bash ours? You state that your priorities shifted; ours did not. It is like you are angry at us for your mistakes!

No one is bashing your area . That is nonsense. Everything I stated is fact and for someone looking to retire they are things they need to consider. Not everyone is as up beat about retiring there and the reasons why not need to be highlighted. Sorry if you can’t take criticism.

things like not having a good public transportation system if you can't drive are not things people tend to think about initially .

there are also long term care needs to consider . with few skilled nursing homes in the area many may end up being shipped up to 100 miles away from family or kids if medicaid is needed . there is a whole lot more to think about then walking around the lake and does on the lawn .

It all depends on what they are looking for. Some people do not worry about a 'retirement job'. You did chose one area that is really out in the sticks as far as medical services and shopping; but that was your choice and not the same choice that others might make. You're happy now because you are with your grandkids; but you choose to buy far away from them originally. How much difference would it make if your grandkids lived here?

It is very hard for me to wrap my head around your motives since this, by your choice, is no longer your area. It is very hard to personally acknowledge our own mistakes; it is so much easier to blame them on others.

Of course I also have problems with our area and I fight to correct those problems. But we had lived here for 71 years, and for the most part, have been very happy.

I never needed a public transportation system. It would not be convenient from our house if we did have one.

We have never experienced a problem finding nursing care or Medicare paying for anything. We do have no experience with Medicaid. But I see many choices in our area; we do have a thriving retirement community.
