I've lived in Scranton for 13 years (first in Green Ridge, currently in the Upper Hill). My husband and I want to buy a house, and we found a nice one right near the farmers' market and Scranton High. Our concern is that we don't know how effective the recent levee system is. Does anyone live in or know about this area? Have the levees been proven yet? Are they intended to stop all flooding or just most flooding? Thanks!

Dan (weluvpa) will likely be the best member to address this question, as he lives on the opposite side of the river in Lower Green Ridge. Best of luck!

The levees are intended to stop the hundred year flood. The levees in that area of town are fine, but what you need to ask about is the residual flooding from the storm drains that back up under heavy rain. The section over had at 12 inches or more of water in the fall 06' and last year I believe from the storm drain system.

When the river gets really high the flap gates on the drains from the streets will not open to allow the water to flow into the river.

Ask the neighbors NOT the realtor. We have had some realtors that are telling their prospective clients that certain homes have been flooded on this side. Mainly because the seller is hiding the fact.

Thanks, weluvpa. I had not even considered storm drain flooding. That is especially worrisome to me as the house in consideration is a split level with the family room in the basement.

Full disclosure...Ask the neighbors then question the seller again. Seriously just go to a few of the houses and ask if they have water problems.
