Parochial schools only charged parents a small fee but their replacement, the diocesan schools, charge $1,000 or more. Private Catholic schools charge just as much as the secular private schools. The Christian Brothers Academy in New Jersey's yearly tuition is $18,000 + other charges.
IDK what the tuition was recently, but it had always been lower than at Notre Dame Elementary in East Stroudsburg even though the 3 schools in Monroe County have been collectively called the "Notre Dame School System" since about 2011. Notre Dame High School tuition for the 2015-16 school year was about $6,600 for an active parishioner, and $7,600 for others. That's the last tuition I have personal knowledge of.

The old parochial schools from the black & white days had a lot of nuns, priests, and brothers teaching there for free which kept tuition low. There have always been fancy Catholic prep schools that coexisted with and have now outlasted the parochial schools.

Didn't know diocesan schools charged that much for tuition. No wonder so many have closed. But not to worry. Catholic colleges and universities are thriving as they charge lower tuition than secular schools and students can easily obtain loans to attend. If government loans were available for K-12, many parents would send their children to one as government schools leave a lot to be desired.

That’s actually pretty cheap. I went to a NYC diocese high school and graduated in 1995. My parents paid that back then plus all the book fees, tech fees, etc. My little cousin is an incoming freshman at the same school. Yearly tuition is now 16k with all the fees added in.
