Now that we have gotten to know each other's political stances, restaurant preferences, occupations, etc., I thought it might be neat to see what particular automobile everyone here drives. Call me nosy if you'd like, but since we've had some inquiries lately as to whether or not 4WD or AWD is a "necessity" in NEPA, it might be nice to see just how many people are "roughing it" without one.

I suppose I'll get the ball rolling. I drive a 1999 Ford Contour LX.

It is very similar to this one except mine is gold.

I drive a 2007 Hyundai Elantra, which I bought from Motorworld, not Dickson City Hyundai.

How do you like your Elantra, Ed? When I graduate next May I want to upgrade to a newer, more fuel-efficient small car, and the Elantra is probably fifth on my list behind the Corolla, Focus, Mazda3, and Civic. Is your car fuel-efficient? Reliable? I've heard others (I believe MrKrabs namely) imply that Hyundais are generally poor quality vehicles, but what have you personally experienced with your Elantra?

I also like MotorWorld as well. I think I liked it better when it was still Ertley's though.

48 miles per gallon?! That's incredible! Is it a manual or automatic transmission? How reliable has it been for you? I've always liked Passats myself, but my uncle's partner has one and has had nothing but problems with it. My partner has a Beetle, and it has already broken down on him as well. Are Volkswagens generally built this poorly?

I have a wrangler too. I work from home so the poor gas mileage hasn't been too much of a burden and it is such a fun car.

My first car ever was an older jetta...a great car...only good memories of the VW.

i put over 20,000 miles on it in the last year, including one trip back to NEPA. We only stopped for fuel 3 times each way on that trip

Mine is a 2003 5 speed. I'm very happy with this car, and hope i never have to own another gasoline powered commuter car. the diesel requires less oil changes (every 10,000 miles) and there is no ignition system to mess with. In other words no spark plugs, spark plug wires, coil packs and the like. its a very simple engine to maintain with a limited amount of complicated computer control systems. Stopping for fuel less is really nice, i get about 700 miles out of a tank of fuel. Although right now with the price of diesel so high there is not much fuel savings over a gas powered jetta.

I have heard a lot of bad things about the automatic transmissions in pre '06 VW's. Personally i can't stand an automatic, so i never really paid attention to the claims. I have also heard a lot of bad things about the 2.0 engine. The V6 and the 1.8t seam to be strong engines.

I only have had one minor problem that was my fault anyway. I drove a little fast on a very muddy desert road and got mud stuck in the turbo actuator. it was an easy fix of removing the part and cleaning it out.

If you have anymore questions let me know!

I love it. This is my second one. I previously owned a 2004 and never had any problems with it. With the 2007 model, the Elantra went to a whole new design. It's reliable, roomy, good on gas and quite peppy for a 2.0 liter engine. Years ago Hyundai's were made poorly. But every year they have been getting better and better. I have also owned a Toyota and a Mazda and were very happy with them also. Those other cars you mentioned are very good too. I guess it all comes down to personal taste and what you can afford. But I do recommend the Elantra highly.

My ex-fiance, though we are still best friends, owns a 2006 Beetle. It seems she is always bringing it to Kelly VW for something. I don't think VW's are being built as good as they used to be. A lot of them are being made in Mexico, which explains the inferior workmanship compared to those made in Germany.
