A lackluster opponent from the other party allowed him to be re-elected.

He didn't literally name the arena after himself but he didn't strenuously object either. The name was changed only after it became fashionable to auction off naming rights to arenas and stadiums.
One of his campaign slogans was :

"Income Tax? No Way! Elect Brendan T. Byrne Governor!"

and as you mentioned, after he won he quickly implemented NJ's income tax!

I recall it quite well.

You never know how that will change.
Look at how fast they changed CAPE KENNEDY back to CAPE CANAVERAL.
I thought that they were supposed to be dead before the naming. Maybe he needs more security.

Do you consider the place you lived at when you were 2 years old, but didn't grow up in as your "hometown" I wouldn't. Anyway very embarrassing for the city to do this.

I have this thread saved for anytime anyone on the right accuses someone of being a "snowflake".

Its a renamed street, not a attempted coup. Keep things in perspective.

It is named after his father not him

Honestly I feel embarrassed everytime I drive past that expressway now. If you're gonna name a highway/street after a President, at least make sure it's a good one.

Maybe it was a Machiavellian maneuver to get Biden to fork over twenty or thirty million bucks to fix it, betting that Biden doesn't want his name on a stretch of congested old pothole-ridden highway either. Or am I giving the leaders of Scranton too much credit?
