It is a sign of the times sadly. This morning GM is taking away retirees health benefits and not giving it to the ones that they are forcing out.
Hat,
Are you kidding? GM is taking away retirees health benefits??? Hubby has an uncle up in the Buffalo area who retired from GM who is very ill right now. This is not going to be good for him. OH boy!!!
The most recent victim of failing economic policy under the Bush Administration, Starbucks announced recently that they are closing hundreds of locations across our nation, mostly ones that are newer and/or under performing. Three local coffee shops---Bloomsburg, Stroudsburg, and Back Mountain--will be closing their doors. I'm personally not a coffee drinker, but I know of many who will be going into withdrawal now! LOL!
Oh man, the store in Bloom is closing? That's a bummer. Not that I enjoy paying $4 for my coffee, but it was a great place to hang out while my daughter practiced at Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble. I was just there today; not much foot traffic, but I guessed that was because the majority of college kids were home for the summer. When school was in that place was nicely crowded. Staff was friendly and service was good.
Any timetable as to when they are to close? There was no sign (literally!) about it there. Just curious...and starting to shake...
Honestly, coffee doesn't cost $4 at Starbucks. Sure, the lattes and frappaccinos and whatever might cost $4, but their regular coffee, which is pretty good, only costs about $1.80 for a large....more than a convenient store, but about the same as Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme.

well to be honest..anyone who thinks they can get rich selling coffee must be a fool! Think about it..how many cups does it take to cover overhead each day? Is Starbucks a franchise? Is so..this is probably how they make their money - not by selling coffee but by selling franchises to silly people with a few bucks. At least dunkin sells donuts..and good ones at that..
Someone asked about 8 o'clock coffee --- they still sell it. In my area -- Thomas'
Market in Tunkhannock, Dallas and Hazleton. And, you still grind it yourself, although not at the checkout !!!! I remember that too !!!!!

And of course Dunkin Donuts is also a franchise...how many donuts would you need to sell for that same overhead?

But coffee is almost completely profit. There's a ton of markup on coffee. Plus, they make even more money on the $4+ lattes, and baked goods, and coffee mugs, etc.
