Hi NEPA people,

I just want to say I've gotten addicted to 'the Office" recently and I would many of you are glad the show put Scranton on the map.

I guess its many things:

fulfillment of a deep inner fantasy where you say and do ignorant and offensive things in a funny and well meaning way in the work place and not get fired like Michael Scott played by Steve Carell (I'm just laughing just thinking of it!)

Maybe its because I have a crush on the character of Pam. (shes cute and intelligent) Hopefully one day I can be some real life Pams' Jim!

And the fact that I like a show to take place in a small, "less cool" city. I never got into the "Manhattan yuppy/sex in the city/friends thing" But then again, Im a guy.

Anyways, out of curiosity.

The real life Scranton area has been known to be relatively economically depressed because it was originally a coal mining processing town. Does it real benefit economically from the fact that it is less than two and a half hours from NYC as having regional offices for major companies?

Nothing negative...I don't personally like the show, but I also don't watch much TV. Its great for the city I guess but it didn't put Scranton on any map.

When the show has run its course (which will happen) Scranton will be nothing more then a fading memory of a show that once was.

Unfortunately we do not benefit from the NYC connection as much as the Poconos of NEPA do. Scranton is still an economically depressed city and it will be a very long time before the economics of this city will turn around. At the current rate it will take generations to turn it around.

I love those armchair quarterbacks that seem to think that all is well in the city while they live elsewhere.... How is VA?

That show could take place in any town in the country. It's not the "Scranton aura" that has made it popular. I highly doubt people in the mid-west give a hoot that "The Office" takes place in Scranton. They like it because it's a funny show.

I'll chime in about VA.

It sucks.

In 9 months, I'll be thankful never to live in this state ever again.

My girlfriend is counting the minutes until the show begins! Not really, but she does like the show...

On the show putting Scranton on the map: the show uses Scranton as a depressing back-drop. It's much lighter in treatment than the original Office's treatment of Slough, England, but still that's why Scranton was chosen. So, I don't know if that's good or bad. You could argue that there's no bad exposure--apparently applications at the U of Scranton are up considerably since the show started.

On the proximity to NYC-- even Newark, NJ can't see much benefit out of being 6 miles away....

The second convention for the sitcom will be held in late-Spring or early-Summer 2009. It was delayed due to the writers' strike. I'm already looking forward to it.

Oh yes it has.

Phoenix metro is full of people that are from somewhere. When I mention that I'm from the Wilkes-barre/Scranton area of north east Pa many people immediately relate to Scranton being on the office. Next time I'm in I need to get get some Scranton tourist stuff for quite a few people.
