County faces battle to borrow | Wilkes-Barre News | The Times Leader
This story came on the News this morning. Wow, your town has a big bunch of debt. What is going to pay that off? You, taxpayers?
I just heard about this on the local TV channel this morning.
So tell me, we pick on Scranton and its towns antics and lack of forbearance. Here we have your neighbor Wilkes in trouble also.
What goes up your way?
16 Million in debt and nowhere to get it from.......Oh my.

Scranton makes a $16,000,000 A YEAR DEBT PAYMENT.......Our annual debt PAYMENT is as high as Wilkes-Barres debt......

We are hundreds of millions in debt.

This is Luzerne county not the city of Wilkes-Barre. Luzerne County is run by a bunch of hated, corrupt politicians like Greg Skrepnak, who has zero experience, and does not belong in his possition. He is a football player who happens to be in charge of the largest county in the region. The city of Wilkes-Barre, as far as I know, is doing pretty good as of late. They just got a higher credit rating. Mayor Leighton keeps a pretty tight grip on the purse strings. Please do not confuse the city with county governments, they are two completely different animals, and the city doesn't deserve the bad, corrupt, incompetent reputation that the county deserves. It's not W-B... it's Luzerne County, and the dopes that run it.

Also, the large, vast majority of the people that pick on Scranton, are the residents of Scranton. We have enough problems to deal with in Luzerne County, to be worrying what happens in Lackawanna County.

Luzerne County's governance is a train wreck, at best, so I'm honestly not surprised. Then again, when you're a commissioner responsible for the well-being of 300,000+ residents and earn only $40,000 per year, of course you're not going to be motivated to do that great of a job. I know high school dropouts who earn that much.

Wilkes-Barre, on the other hand, is doing just fine under Mayor Leighton, and I pity the very few who voted for his opponent, Linda Stets-Urban (wife of county commissioner Steve Urban), in the prior election. I think Wilkes-Barre's finances are actually under control, believe it or not.
