I will be retiring soon and am tired of below zero weather, snow and ice. I want a warmer, safe place to move to but will be on limited income. How expensive is it to live in PA? What are the average utiilty bills? ? To start with I will need to rent a place that allows pets and am wondering what the average rent would be in a nice area. I don't like big cities but do want shopping to be near. Is there activities or clubs for retired citizens? I won't want a full time job but may want a part time job so I don't get bored and can get out to meet people. Any suggestions? No school-aged children so that is not a concern to me. Probably around Hershey? I have been to Hershey and really did like that area.

PA can be cold and can get a lot of snow and from what little I know, I dont think Hershey is that inexpensive - you might want to post on this forum

w/ a bit more info as to how much you want to spend, if you're open to other states (which may be more affordable), manufactured homes, over 55 communities w/ lots of social activities (although some may restrict the # of pets to 2) etc.

You might want to look in the Carlisle/Mt. Holly Springs area. South of the mountains you have a milder climate. An advantage PA has over MD is no tax on pensions. Delaware might also be an option, no sales tax and generally lower other taxes.

North beach has some intelligent ideas. Yes, no tax on pensions. Delaware is even better. The banks pick up the taxes down there and it is very affordable. I have a relatives that have beautiful houses and pay next to nothing on taxes.

I love PA, especially the area that I am living in now. But everyone has to find their nitche.

if your tired of snow and ice than nepa isnt the best place for you. i think 52" of snow last year qualifies us as a snow belt. for retires pa is pretty friendly however pa has an inheiratance tax that for some can be a load of dough.

Unfortunately, Pennsylvania is becoming a liberal state, and as such, has been voting for those who significantly raise property taxes. As a result, rent and housing are becoming more expensive in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania isn't really as good of a place to retire as it was say 15 years ago. You should consider Florida, especially since you can practically name your price on a house purchase, and rent should be pretty low.

Your first line says it all. I don't know where you're coming from, but PA is all that! You may want to go more south like DE, VA, NC.
