The article states there will be no tax increase under this year's budget. This is also the first budget under Doherty to decrease. That's not saying much for his last 6 years of balancing the budget. I don't know, I'm suspicious because this is coming from the Doherty rag, they want to make things all rosy, when in reality they're not. If Scranton is indeed getting a tax hike, the residents are probably getting screwed somewhere else. The city has to borrow from somewhere to cover the huge deficit.

No tax hike this year but wait until the next mayor has to slam us with multiple tax hikes to cover the debt. There is no question he is looking to borrow at least $14,500,000 just on the TANS this year so lets see what he adds to it.

I'll say it now....Doherty is not running for mayor.....He will probably go after Kanjorski in 2010 but cannot do that if he loses for mayor and better to bow out a two time winner then the last loser. The city is going to fiancially implode somewhere in the next 2-3 years and I don't think he is going to want to be at the wheel when it happens.

What a wonderful state Doherty has left the city for the next mayor. Empty buildings, crumbling infrastructures, crime up and public safety down, a mountain of debt and a lack of vision that concentrates on parks and the downtown instead of the neighborhoods. Good luck, to whoever you might be, you're going to need it. Our pride is restored now.

Is Doherty running again?? Usually when they pull stuff like "no tax hikes" it's due to their bucking for re-election...

Sounds like this is Scranton under Doherty------->

That was just my two cents...I honestly don't think he is going to run, but we'll see...I think he is gearing up for Kanjorski in 2010.

This is from the Scranton Times Friday's edition where it stated that Doherty WILL run for a third term:

Doherty: No tax hike for Scranton

When City Hall unveils its 2009 budget this afternoon, two potential game-changers will be conspicuously absent.

The first is a $6 million windfall expected from the Single Tax Office. Second are the police and fire union contracts, as close to new deals as the sides have been in seven years.

Scranton officials won’t say how much the city might need to borrow to cover a deficit, but Mayor Chris Doherty, crafting his last budget before he runs for a third term next year, guaranteed there will be no tax increase.

Business Administrator Stu Renda also said the budget won’t surpass the record $84.6 million set in 2008, which could make it the first budget under Mr. Doherty to decrease.

Moderator cut: shortened, copyright protection. Please provide a link to the article

So, Doherty is all set to give raises to Ray Hayes, Moran, and others but not doing the right thing by the Fire and Police Departments? Maybe he is banking on using the interest earned on the Tax Office money that has been sitting in an account to cover raises and the Fire and Police contracts?

Good luck to Doherty for his third run - and yes that is full of sarcasm.

He gives raises to unqualified people, yet can't open the pocketbook for our public servants, the fire and police. If Scranton elects this clown for a third term, the city deserves everything they get, because most likely I won't be living here by then.

He has already annouced that he was running and that MEANS NOTHING....As we get closer to the election year he could easily back out for a run against Kanjorski, he could also use any funds that he raised to do it.

I honestly do not think that he will win a thrid term. The Times can print whatever they want.....He has not filed ANY papers yet and until that is done he is just SAYING that he is going to run.

His ego will not let him be a third term loser......I still say that when it comes down to it he will not run.....Kanjorski will be an easy target for him in 2010 considering that he squeaked by this time it seems like the next rung in political ladder....

Remember he screwed himself with the Democrats for McCain thing and he knows it...His options are limited and he will not just bow out of politics, thats not how he operates...He wants more and he wants to climb that ladder but now there are only so may rungs for him to reach for......

There will be no position for him in the Obama admin.....There will be no position for him in the state, so Kanjorski is the only option to get out of the political blackhole that is Scranton.
