DansDrive, I think you might be of a "certain age". I also grew up in the era when it was a big family outing to take a drive to see all the Christmas lights! In 2008, I think the kids are too busy watching the "entertainment system" in the minivan, or playing Nintendo DS to even look up and see the decorations! I grew up in a simpler, sweeter time. One of my best memories was "playing" in the snow until my fingers started to freeze. I would come in and put my woolen mittens on the radiator to dry. I can still recall the smell of those mittens as they dried...

Dans drive your so right........
I actually liked tinsel back then........wouldn't have had a tree without it. Sparkles. ( not now though)
I loved the tree so much, and still do today. I always remember Christmas Tree day......the day we would go for it. Most the time at a lot, but that was so much fun.
I always remember company, and Christmas dinner.....
Sleds......How happy we'd be if we got a new sled. Or........NEW skates! for the pond out back.
I have to admit I loved, loved my first tape recorder ( that I beggggged for so I could sing)
We hid it here and there and taped people from behind their chairs.......then........we'd laugh hysterically listening to everyones voice coming out of it. That was so much fun.

My mittens dripped down into the coal fire below, and there would be a crackling.......

Once my dad joined in to the town event of "best Christmas house"........We had an ice scene in all colors. It was gorgeous. The problem was I saw the judges come during a warm spell and in the daytime hours........Gosh, if they had only come at night, during those cold days.....the ice kept freezing on the trees and stones. So beautiful. Dad just kept hosing the area, and in all colors a joy.

Oh yea I am of a 'Certain Age' ...

A age when I got to be a kid growing up. I didn't have to worry about acting and trying to be an adult!
A age where I played outside in the neighborhood till the street light came on.
A age where games were made up in our minds and not on a TV screen.
A age where we walked to school to be with our friends and respect our teachers. We may not have liked them but we respected them.
A age where the first time I heard the 'F' word was at 12 years old.
A age where we had a downtown and could walk to it.
A age where they actually had drive-in movies that families and high school sweethearts could go!
A age where it was a special occasion to go out to a restaurant to eat instead of your Mothers cooking or your Grandmothers cooking! Like the McDonald's on San Souci Parkway! Oh boy!
A age where you helped your friends and neighbors without reservation!
A age where you did stupid things and laughed instead of thinking who you could sue because you may have hurt yourself!

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the comforts of today's life style but I truly miss the family value system that was in place back in that 'Certain Age'.

I wish I could find a place that still had these values or was working towards them instead of fleeing towards the latest electronics and being alone on a computer instead of with family and friends....

Earlier comments about drying mittens made me remember putting our socks and mittens on the old cast iron radiator so they would dry fast and we could go back out in the snow! After our hot chocolates, of course!

Well we just dried the mittens on the fireplace doors along with a coat or two yesterday..........
The fire was adjusted over and over with logs and kindling
Then it was off for sleigh riding..........
Back in for cookies we just made, and some nice HOT chocolate.....
Oh that felt real good........It felt like we did go back in time to a simpler time and place!!!

Excellent! Now if you can get a few thousand more familes to do this the area will be back in time. A time of warmth, hospitality, and values!

P.S. What kind of cookies were they?

They are sugar cookies made with a tad of sour cream........
All the kids line up to make them from scratch........then roll them out.......and pick from tons of cutters. Lastly we add all kinds of sprinkles. When they come out of the oven, they head to the one they decorated........and gobble it up. I have the recipe posted on here someplace just the other day for Enya..........

Songs of the Season...by PoconoPoet (PoconoProud's alter ego)

When I hear a song of the season, it lifts my spirit...
I become full of joy the instant that I hear it.

When the choir sings "Silent Night",
I see baby Jesus, bathed in light...
I see the Kings and the animals awed by the sight,
that are gathered to witness Him on this Holiest night.

"Have a Holly-Jolly Christmas" and "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree"
are two holiday songs that fill me with glee.

"I'll Be Home For Christmas" brings to my eye a tear...
being away from loved ones is the theme that's very clear...
but then, "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer"
is full of Christmas Cheer!

"The Twelve Days of Christmas" my radio now sings...
'six geese a laying....FIVE GOLDEN RINGS'...

"Santa Clause is Coming to Town"
is enough to erase a small child's frown,
and remember that sleigh-time classic, "Jingle Bells"...
that we used to follow with "Bat Man Smells"?!......lol..

They're songs that take you back in time,
and warm your heart, rhyme by rhyme...
Holiday classics that everyone knows,
and sing 'round the tree as it twinkles and glows...

We'll play "Rock -n- Roll Christmas", and drink egg nog,
and sing "Frosty The Snowman" as we burn the Yule Log...
Before you must sing "Old Lang Syne", and bid this year adeu...
sing out a Merry Christmas Song, and bring out the spirit in you!!

Merry Christmas, NEPA!
