Seeing that I've always said on this forum that the overall cheapest place to buy groceries in the area is Wal-Mart, I figured I would post when I found out otherwise. Wegman's has been advertising that they lowered their prices, so I figured I'd give them a shot, since I'm sick of dealing with Wal-Mart crowds. I did the grocery shopping at Wegman's this weekend and found their prices to be as good as Wal-Mart (and better quality, especially in produce and meat). I'd say that some things were cheaper than Wal-Mart, some things a little more expensive, and most about the same....so price-wise it was a wash. Plus, it was nice not to deal with the madhouse known as Wal-Mart, it was a much more enjoyable experience at Wegman's.

There's still a few items that I buy at Wal-Mart, but no more big grocery orders for me at Wally World.

We did the same order at Price Chopper, Gerrity's, Giant, Wal-mart, Wegmans on a different week for each store...Wegmans hands down won out for quality and price....We shop for groceries at Wegmans and the big stuff(40lb dog food) at Sam's...

You are so right about Wegman's! Before having a child hubby & I often shopped there, but once the "grocery budget" came along, I thought I should try a different store. Well after shopping around and not really feeling satisfied with the prices I was paying, I decided to head back to Wegman's. I find that if I stick to my list, and avoid the specialty areas that I do better than I ever did at Giant or Price Chopper (I think PC is the most expensive store around). Plus I can't say enough about the atmosphere there, I don't feel too bad (even though I hate to grocery shop) and the baby enjoys it there too.

I did try Wal-mart once, and I swear I was having heart palpitations in the aisles...no amount of savings is worth the effort to shop there (honestly I didn't think their prices were all the great - except for juices and cereal).

Funny you should say that about palpitations. When my mother shops at Wal Mart (or any other crowded store), she gets the same and dizzy. She feels like she just has to get out of there. Her doctor diagnosed it as panic attacks.

I agree...Price Chopper is the most expensive store around. The name of their store is false advertising, they are not chopping any prices.

I'm sticking to Wegmans from here on out.

I get aggravated at Wal-Mart....the crowds, and the small aisles, and the ridiculous lines at the registers make me want to pull my hair out!

I love wegmans too, but, sometimes when they say they lowered prices, they didnt, they just left them the same, and it's walmart who raised their prices! One week their cookies were 88cents and usual, the next week $1.19. That's a huge markup!

I try to get to wegmans whenever i can, but my usual shopping is done at Shoprite in Daleville

I go to Wegman's when I can, as I just like it the best. I've been trying to convince my partner that Price Chopper is expensive; their branding is effective-- she's in denial. Need to do the full-on comparison shopping.

Surprised to hear that Wegman's beat Wal-mart in your tests. Never tried a Wal-mart; glad to hear I don't need to. I've found basic staples to be really cheap at Shur-Save markets, too.

To PC's credit, their organic produce is the best around-- the Wegman's in Dick City is just ok..

Thats the key....Sticking to the list will show you the fluxuation in the prices....The only time we stray from the list is for seafood and ONLY when I know what is and is not in season or fresh....
