Post it on CraigsList (it's free). It's amazing how quickly stuff goes when posted on that site! There's even a "free" section. I bet someone would be at your door within the hour if you posted it there.

depending on the age, you could donate it to the school system and then deduct it on your taxes as a charitable contribution.

If the PC works you'll find someone that wants it. I picked up a few myself as I do a lot of video work which is very CPU intensive. I can send it off to a networked computer freeing my main machine... Certainly not going to get done as fast on a slower machine but I'm generally in no rush.

You might want to make sure your hard drive is wiped clean if you did any kind of sensitive stuff on your PC (bill paying, internet banking, etc.) before getting rid of it. Someone who knows what they're doing can recover deleted files.

Well then that would render the thing worthless and defeat the purpose of giving away wouldn't it?

Correct but just the drive which is relatively cheap. Pointless to do it unless you're really paranoid and want to help alleviate it. AFAIK once DBAN gets done with a drive the data is gone unless in theory as I understand recovery is still possible at a subatomic level.
