Hi

I'm new to this forum but I hope that someone will be able to give some advice. My husband has received 2 job offers, one in Tobyhanna Army Depot and the other in Savannah, GA at Hunter AAF two totally different areas. I have read the forums about both areas and my main concern seems to be the crime which is mentioned constantly. We currently live in Germany and are relocating back to the US but before the move to Germany we lived in Fort Walton Beach, FL a very safe but expensive place to live. Having spent 3 years in a place that we just did not like we cannot afford to make another mistake so any help would be appreciated.

The Tobyhanna area is very small, and people from many surrounding areas work there. They have many busses and carpools from all areas, so you wouldn't be limited to living right in the town of Tobyhanna. The Pocono Mountain area has been known to have a crime problem and it would be best to steer clear of it and especially many of the developments. The area where I live (Greentown/Newfoundland) is very small townish and inexpensive and approximately 30 minutes from the depot (I worked there many years ago). There are many areas that you could choose depending on what type of home and lifestyle you prefer. Alot of this has been discussed previously on this board, so if you do a search, you'll probably find lots of info.

Yeah, I agree. I love Savannah. There are some really poor areas, but if you can live closer to downtown (or in downtown), then you'll love it. And you can't beat the year-round high temperate of at least 60 degrees!

This is kind of like asking "Should I have a massage, or root canal surgery?". Savannah.

I promise that there is northing dumb about the question. Our answers are honest and sure there might be sarcasm, but our point is that if we had to pick that we would be looking at Savannah before Tobyhanna.

I like to comparison to the root canal.

Savannah would be my choice. I more comfortable place, no harsh winters.......A well loved town noted by many.
I agree with everyone above....

Yeah, the two aren't even comparable. Tobyhanna is rural and about 20-25 minutes from Scranton, a city that's still only a little more than half the population of Savannah. Scranton is an Appalachian city; Savannah is a southern city along the coastal plain.

The cities' proximity to other cities is also an issue for traveling:

From Savannah:

1.0 hours to Hilton Head Island
2.0 hours to Charleston, SC and Jacksonville, FL;
3.5 hours to Daytona Beach
4.0 hours to Atlanta, Charlotte, and Myrtle Beach
4.5 hours to Orlando;
5.0 hours to the Research Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill)
5.5 hours to Tampa;
6.0 hours to Birmingham, AL

From Scranton:

1.0 hours to Allentown
2.0 hours to Philadelphia and New York City (barring traffic)
3.5 hours to Baltimore
4.0 hours to Washington, D.C.
5.0 hours to Boston and Pittsburgh.
6.0 hours to Burlington, VT and Cleveland, OH.

I meant no disrespect, but you said you know little about the two cities, and I figured you'd be more aware of the difference between a massage and root canal surgery. It's -10 today in a good deal of NEPA. In Savannah...you need one year round wardrobe.
