Hello!

I am looking at a house on Boulevard Ave in Scranton. I am waiting to go and see it, but i ma told this is a nice neighborhood. Low crime rate. Is this correct?

Thanks all!

Boulevard Avenue forms more or less the western boundary of the relatively affluent Green Ridge neighborhood of North Scranton. It's certainly not the most aesthetically pleasing part of Green Ridge, but crime should not be a concern. With that being said I would always make sure to keep your car doors locked with valuables out of sight, keep your home doors locked when not home, and to invest in a timer for your lamps to have them kick on automatically when you're out for the evening to give the impression that someone is currently at home. A professor of mine lives in a wealthier area of Green Ridge, and his home along with a neighboring one was burglarized last year when they weren't home. Giving ADT a call and getting an alarm system certainly wouldn't hurt.

That street is in a generally good area, but with the economy in as poor of shape as it's in many people are turning to desperate measures. Just don't avail yourselves of being the targets of would-be burglars or pick-pockets, and you'll be fine.

Welcome in advance to Scranton!

What block? Thanks for the input Paul, did you have to google map it to find out where it was?

We had a family business on Boulevard for years and my cousin still has his business there as well so just let me know which block and I'll shot you some feedback.

I've been on Boulevard Avenue before. I walked along it during one of my photo tours.

Default An aside on home security systems

ADT is not the only security system provider in the area. There are other local companies who do a good job and are sometimes VERY competitive on systems, monitoring fees, and services.

Shop around and talk to a couple people if possible. It isn't that difficult or time consuming. Systems and service arrangements often remain in place for many years. It is usually worth some analysis.

Sorry. I realize that now. I'm currently embroiled in a huge cyber-fight on a non-City-Data forum and have more testosterone pulsing through my veins right now than Rosie O'Donnell at an Old Country Buffet!

Just want to mention that theft is on the rise everywhere at the moment, and I would doubt there is any area of the city that is free from the risk of theft at this time. Same for the rest of the country. While a security system might be a good idea, I don't want you to get the impression that it is an unsafe area. Anyone who leaves themselves open to loss of property is bound to get taken advantage of sooner or later. Precaution is simply common sense.

My aunt lives in Hanover Twp., & 2 streets over, some young guys broke into an old man's house, took his money & assorted stuff, & then beat him up real bad!! She's 82 now, lives alone & is a nervous wreck over it...

Down here robberies are on the rise also...you're absolutely right, it's everywhere!!

Wise words. I've only been the victim of theft once in my lifetime, and that was right here in the "crime can't happen here" suburbs where several classmates and I were pick-pocketed during a high school gym class because our gym teacher forgot to lock the locker room door. There were two muggings last year in West Pittston, and that is generally considered to be one of the nicest communities in Luzerne County. The gay porn producer who was nearly decapitated in 2007 lived in one of the region's most affluent communities, the Back Mountain. As I said my professor and one of his neighbors, who lived on a tonier Green Ridge block, had their homes burglarized last year. Crime isn't "high" around here by any means, but people need to get out of their "Leave it to Beaver" mindset and stop being stupid---if you leave your car running with your keys in the ignition while you run in to buy a pack of smokes there's a fairly good chance it won't be there when you return. If you leave a GPS adhered to your dashboard as you prance around the mall, there's a good chance it will be swiped. Just don't be foolish, and you should be fine!
