I got a text message today that simply ready "Harry Kalas Died" from my cousin Matt. I started crying.. I'm from Philly and spent my youth at veterans stadium before I moved up here. I was there for Mike Schmidt's retirement, I was there when it came down. To me watching the Phillies and listening to Harry was more American the BBQ's and Apple Pie. He was fantastic and Philly loved him. Hearing him say "That ball is Outta Here, HomeRun Micheal Jack Schmidt" is the most memorable phrase of my childhood.

I love ya Harry!

He died in one of the places he loved most. All my life I've been a Phillies fan, and I'll really miss his voice. Mark Fidrych of Tigers fame died today, too!

It's say when you lose a famous sports caster, and I'm sorry that all Phillies fans suffered this loss. A few years ago, as a Yankees fan, I had a similar experience when Phil "Scooter" Rizzuto died. These folks are some of the greats, and it was always fun to listen to him speak of the old times, and how things have changes so much in modern baseball.

I'm sorry for your loss, it sounds like this gentleman died doing what he enjoyed most. While sad, it was also appropriate, and I'm sure he wouldn't have had it any other way.

I am so saddened by the loss. He was the Phillies to me. I have been a fan since I was a boy and he was the voice I remembered. He made some of the really lean years tollerable and exciting.

I had a close encounter with him and Whitey Ashburn once. My then little brother, my then girlfriend (now wife of 28 years) and I on the urging of a family friend went to the Phillies office at the Vet. Our friend used to rent a room a long time ago to then pitching coach Ray Ripplemeyer. We knocked sheepishly on the door. We explained that we wanted to meet with Ray. They said sure, take the elevator down to the playing level. I was never more nervous in my life. The elevator door opens to revel Harry and Whitey. We get in the elevator and they say hi..asked us something, I was in shock I probably just stammered something. We exit with them, Ashburn going to the field for interviews and not sure where Harry went. They were very nice. Anyhow, the Astros were in town, Ripplemeyer says hi who are you? We explain, he said come into the dugout,do you have a ball for autographs.. ball, ball what's a ball? He gets autographs on a ball, I have my mit autographed I am there with my heros. One of the best days in my life.

God bless you Harry, thanks for the memories.
