OK, the time is fast approaching when we'll be moving to NEPA and we still haven't decided which area will suit us best: we are considering the Hill section and Green Ridge in Scranton, possibly Dunmore and Moscow and now someone told me good things about the schools in Tunkhannock so any insight to share about the town? I saw the thread that Paul posted with the photos. . .it looks gorgeous!!! Those are the type of homes we are looking to buy!!!! My husband though read on an older thread a post by someone who urgerd people to absolutely not move there because people got arrested for no reason (????). It seems a little odd to me, but I really would appreciate more information about the town as we try to decide where we are going to end up (we have 3 small children too so it has to be safe and kid friendly)
Thank you!!!!

Default Hi

I am in Tunkhannock and we absolutely love it. There are so many nice people that we have met and we have only been here for 2 months. The homes are still affordable compared to Clarks Summit and other areas.
The kids in town look like a nice bunch too. There are stores and restaurants for all the essentials also. You won't have to travel to Dickson City for things because there is a Foodtown, Weiss, and ShureSave to shop for groceries.
There are restaurants; McD's, Burger King, Two Chinese Buffets, Pizza Hut, Twigs Restaurant, Sicilia Italian Restaurant, and a few other pizza parlors.
There's everything we need right here in town from hardware stores to shoe stores. We even have a regular Walmart on Rt. 29 that is open 24 hrs.

The area is beautiful and not crowded. If you ever need a sitter I can help!!
I am going to babysit in my home starting in May for infants.

Hope this all helps.

Oh, and that person complaining about Tunkhannock must have been a real piece of work.

I'll second Rosanna's claims. Tunkhannock is an absolutely wonderful community. The only drawback is the long drive to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. It's a gorgeous, laid-back, relaxing drive in the warmer months to get to either city, but the winter is a living hell with all of those hills! As she said, you won't really need to go to either city very often, but considering how bleak the employment outlook is in Wyoming County, you'd be working in the Scranton area no doubt. The largest employers in Tunkhannock are Procter & Gamble (Paper Products Factory), Tyler Memorial Hospital,
Wal-Mart, and the Tunkhannock Area School District.

I also live here in Tunkhannock and LOVE it! Think Norman Rockwell. It's a great place to raise kids. I've been here for 3 years. Crime is not a concern.

I'm a city boy (lived in Green Ridge for 20 years so I can tell you about that as well) so when I was moving out here I thought I was going to the sticks! I was wrong. There are plenty of amenities and places to eat. I just can't say enough about this town.

My father-in-law was a teacher here in town up until last year so I had plenty of exposure to the students and the school. It's great. The kids are disciplined save for a few rowdy skateboarders here and there but they're only having fun. They don't cause trouble.

Please check my profile. I am also a Mortgage Specialist working out of my home office here in Tunkhannock. Feel free to PM me for more information. No matter where you decide to go, I can help. I can recommend a good Realtor too.

Best of luck!

Thank you all for the replies.

I already have a job in Scranton, that's why we are moving to the area, so I would definitely be commuting. I do however have a big SUV so hopefully the drive wouldn't be so bad. I just had a very very nice conversation with the school district administrators, they were so polite and friendly, and they seem to do full inclusion for kids with SN who can handle it which is my daughter's case and that is very important to us. Still considering Scranton itself, as I said, but I have been watching the real estate listings for months and I have found very very little in the Hill or in Green Ridge which are the 2 areas we are interested in . . .

Follow your heart. Do yourself a favor as well and visit both school districts as well to get a "feel" for them and the environment they may offer your daughter. Tunkhannock is like taking a step back into a bygone era. People still stop to allow pedestrians to cross streets and are generally more "laid-back" than we city slickers.

well, I'm definitely a city gal myself, I am originally from (insert name of famous European city so living in a rural area would be a stretch for me but my kids' well being has to come first. We have appointments set up with Scranton Public schools as well as North Pocono in addition to Tunkhannock so we'll see how the meetings go face to face and which district has the best options for special ed . . . .

Default Take Morgan Hwy into Scranton from Tunkhannock

Even during the winter (which is still happening here LOL) Rt. 307 is a great way to get to Dickson City and Scranton. We were taking rt. 6 but SWB suggested rt. 307 which is much nicer and without all the traffic you encounter on rt. 6.

Can anyone recommend a nice (not too expensive!) hotel to stay in for the Tunkhannock area? We're coming out to take a look around, and there don't seem to be any major hotel chains (which is fine with us!) We'd also be open to tent camping if there are any campgrounds -- Thanks!
