Sister Adrian needs to go somewhere else...and stop defacing the beauty of NEPA...or what it once was. All i can say is from expereince living in that area from 1998-2004: beautiful, laid back, friendly, clean. Many memories, many friends, relaxing. Now.....a sad state of affairs. I was born and raised in NJ...came to Keystone College to get away from my surroundings and finish my education. When i moved up there and gotten used to the surroundings, i was shocked and amazed by the rich culture, simple ways of life, "laid-back" way of living, etc.....i was able to experience everything from city (Scranton) lviving to country living (Gibson)....what a gorgeous area. To read and know now that its turning into what i came to escape is just sad and pathetic. I mean, seriously....shooting/stabbings/etc what i read in the news from there???? It was never THAT bad back when i was up there...and the woodlands....went ghetto.......i liked wearing a collared shirt and a nice pair of jeans/slacks/boots/shoes and going out there to meet new people....no more now??? Now its all screwed up. Really makes me sad to read about it. If it wasnt for the job situation, i wouldve stayed up there...sad to see the area go downhill....

You're right. It's getting worse in these parts. It's starting to resemble the South Bronx in parts of the city. Not only is there an influx of welfare and Section 8 individuals, the crime rate is going up, as is the unemployment rate. There are no real sustainable jobs, because there is no real industry. The influx of people we're getting from NY/NJ are the wrong type. I have nothing against outsiders, I was one myself, but we're getting too many people that don't contribute and want to use and abuse the system. It's only going to get worse I'm afraid.

OMG, I killed a nun!!! I could've sworn that she died, but I've been looking for info and can't find anything other than that she retired. Sister Adrianne, if you're reading this, my apologies. And also, if you could sweep all the riff-raffs from Scranton back to NJ and NY I would greatly appreciate it.

I always said that if Sister Adrian really wanted to help these people, she should have moved to the inner city and helped them change their neighborhoods. She accomplished nothing by importing them to Scranton other than moving inner-city problems to Scranton.

However I find the linked diagram to be rather odd. I wonder how they selected their corridors, even omitting one (Rutland VT-Albany) that now *has* Amtrak service. They're not following existing rail links either, witness the connection to Ithaca - the only existing rail line to Ithaca is directly from the south, not from the east as this diagram shows.

Really, a Scranton-NJ rail link would start out most economically as a Stroudsburgs-NJ link. Would that be so bad?
Good post.

The guys at the Transport Politic are serious transportation policy wonks. They explain their methodology for their Proposed North American Intercity Rail Network in detail here.

I believe you are correct, passenger and freight rail lines are seldom shared; however with the additional cost to build or upgrade to high speed rail....the tracks would not be shared, considering the additional maintenance monies needed, with the freight train's "wear and tear" on a high speed system.

Wow after reading all the posts about the trains, I see it's still a sore subject for many, As I have stated on several "older" posts..I am a great fan of trains, I took the train many times as a little girl with
my parents and sister from Hoboken, N.J. to Pa...My parents never had the luxury of owning a car, so
the train was wonderful for us. We used to summer in Shohola, Pa. When I moved with my family to the
Poconos, I loved it, however the drive going back to N.J. was awful, Hated Route 80, trucks, road was
in terrible condition especially in the winter. Would have loved to be able to take a train and meet my
husband in the New York for dinner, or the theater and take my children to the museum, etc..And please don't tell me then I should have stayed in the city...I chose to move to Pa. because I always had a great fondness for Pa. and loved the "fresh air" mountains, etc. It's too bad they discontinued the
trains to begin with. As far as a commute goes, it certainly is quicker than being stuck in traffic in a car
or on a bus to the Port Authority. We are all worrying about going green in this country, but yet we
balk at creating less traffic with the polluting cars? go figure. As far as Drugs go, I heard that comment
over 17 years ago (when there was talk about bringing the trains back) that the trains would bring drugs. Well guess what folks drugs came anyway, without the trains...I dont' think it can get any worse. I do believe that the trains could make a pleasant difference, but I can understand the other side of this also....People moved to Pa, or stayed there because they didnt' want the hustle and bustle
of the city....Too bad we can't have train service like they do in Europe...it's wonderful...It's a sore
subject and I guess you will always have two sides to this story...I'll be watching and listening to see
what the outcome is....

That would have been the ideal thing to do. Instead she left them with us to deal with while she did nothing. Brilliant!!!
