I'd recommend just south of their on Assateague, go in late September or early October. The weather is perfect, water is still warm, no bugs and not so crowded. Course you need to camp but it's right on beach. Alcohol allowed...

Assateague Island National Seashore (U.S. National Park Service)

Ocean City, MD is only about 20 or 30 minute drive if wanted to split the time between camping and hotel.

EDIT: if you go there in the summer bring extra strength bug spray in the BIG can.

There are many nice beaches in NJ with over 120 miles of coastline. Towns vary in character, cost, facilities etc. Would you rent a house? Condo? Hotel? Day trip? Weekday or weekend? Amusements, casinos? Dining? Quiet and exclusive or busy and honky-tonk.... Etc.

Avalon and Stone Harbor are very nice. Island Beach State Park is a jewel. Long Beach Island "LBI" is very popular. Cape May is quaint. Etc. Etc.

As in pizza and hot dogs, everyone has their favorites and reasons why. http://www.state.nj.us/travel/index.html

I just got back from vacationing in Wildwood last week. I highly recommend it. The beaches are rated top in the state, and for good reason....one, they're free! Also, they're nice and wide, and CLEAN! The boardwalk will keep you busy for hours....2 miles of boardwalk with 3 different piers....rides and attractions for any age....and of course Curley's fries and Kohr's Brothers frozen custard...reason alone to go there!

Forgot to add, wherever you go....be smart and leave on a weekday, NOT a weekend. It took us 5 1/2 hours to get down there, which should have been a 3 hour trip (we left from North Jersey). Traffic on the Parkway is *brutal* on weekends!

I like Wildwood, but I've only stayed in Wildwood Crest, definitely more family-friendly. Wildwoods downfall is the beaches are so wide....its a major hike to the water...not good with little kids. But after going back to Ocean City, MD, for the first time in 13 years after going to the Jersey shore for the past 6 years, I can say that Maryland is way nicer than the Jersey shore. Nicer boardwalk, cleaner beaches, better food....and its more affordable than the Jersey shore.

Funny, the wider beaches are one of the reasons I prefer Wildwood. When I was on my way down last weekend, a friend called me who was in Seaside (or as I like to refer to it as, Sleezeside), and said some of the beaches there were actually CLOSED due to being too crowded! You'll never find that in Wildwood, that's for sure! I've never been to Ocean City, MD before but I've heard nice things about it. I grew up going to Wildwood Crest with my Dad...we used to stay at the Reges all the way at the south end. This year we stayed in North Wildwood....I didn't notice too much of a difference honestly...all of Wildwood has become pretty family family in the last several years since the construction of all the new condos, etc.

I lived in South Jersey for 7 years. Here's my tip for driving to the shore and beating traffic.
1. When you get to Philly, tune to KYW news 1060 AM. They give the traffic report every 10 minutes. Listen for conditions on the Atlantic City Expressway and the North-South Freeway. If there's congestion:

2. If going to Atlantic City -> Drive on the N-S freeway (Rt.42) until the road forks to the AC Expwy (left) and the Black Horse Pike (Rt. 42, right). The Black Horse Pike will take you all the way to AC. It has several traffic lights for the first 5 miles, but after that, there's very few lights and has 4 lanes with a 55 MPH speed limit.
from: I-76 E to: atlantic city, nj - Google Maps

3. If going to Wildwood or Cape May -> Take the N-S Fwy and get off at the Vineland Expy (Rt. 55). Then take Delsea Dr. (Rt. 47) all the way to Wildwood. This is an expressway to Vineland and then a country road to Wildwood. Much more scenic than looking at the tailpipe of the car in front of you.

I was just down there last week. On Assateague Island, a shark was found within knee deep water. It's nice, but it depends on what you are looking for. I personally like to stay on the bayside of Fenwick Island. Nice to watch the sunset from the whirlpool tub.

But if you're on beach you get nice long shadows for sunset and you can take cool pictures like this. It is Assateague. It can also be found on the inside of one of 40 LB heads CD's. Forget which one, too many beers.

That's the drive I take to Wildwood...much more scenic and less hectic than the AC Expressway.

A cool thing to check out if you're in the Wildwood/Cape May area of the shore is the Cape May Lighthouse.
