I can say that in the 2000 Census it was one of two counties with more seasonal than full-time housing units. It's not one of the counties with no traffic light, because there's one in Dushore. Ought to take that out and replace it with a four-way stop to give the county something more to brag about.

Lopez has a nice web site for a small town: Lopez, PA On-Line Considering that many of the items for sale there have the tagline "Icebox of Pennsylvania" heating costs might be an issue.

Watching the weather reports on the news, Lopez is always listed on the map with the coldest temperatures. Probably beautiful in the summer, but brutal winters.

I was in Lopez recently at a friend's campsite....when I tell you it is in the middle of nowhere...it REALLY is the middle of nowhere. It is beautiful, that's for sure....but I would personally lose my mind in a town like that....and I prefer a country setting myself! And yes, Lopez gets the more extreme weather.

That would be a tough drive, but not entirely impossible. Any snow or ice, and count on extra time. And when lower lying areas are having rain, Red Rock Mountain, and the road up over it (Rt 487) have all ice and snow. You should drive it before deciding, the Red Rock Mountain section has a long and steep section, it's signed for trucks for example, they have to pull over and stop before starting their descent.

Some people must do it (travel the Red Rock Mountain section) because even in bad weather, snow covered, there is some traffic. That's both good and bad, good = heavy traffic so snow plowed regularly, bad = one vehicle goes off the snowy road and you can't get through for an hour or so.

I guess the tradeoff here for the sketchy drive is a great lifestyte and/or quality of life.

At one time I was considering something like this. I'll be curious if you do this, report back in a few months and let us know!

An observation to add. The newspaper for the county is called the Sullivan County Review, printed weekly in Eagles Mere, and available from some newsstands in WB. And just to point out how laid back and old-school life must be there, that newspaper still prints, under social news or community news, reports like this: "On Sunday afternoon, Joe and Mary from X visited with Mr. and Mrs. John Doe of Y, and enjoyed coffee and pastries and caught up on old times". There are several paragraphs of this every issue. Where else do you see that in any newspaper anymore?

well all interesting thoughts. As for us, we lived in the white mountains of New hampshire, and had fox, black bear, and coyote's around the house frequently. The winter temps there could get to minus 40, and we measured snow in feet not inches. The town of Easton where we lived would have lost out in a war with two squirrels and a chipmonk, and the only crimes were of animals in the trash maybe. We are both in our mid 50's so not much need for excitement, the area sounds heavenly so far.

From what you discribed...you'll fit right in. That is a hell of a commute though to Wilkes-Barre especially in the wintertime. I think you'll need a snowmobile to make the tripup and down Red Rock Mountain. It is a beautiful, rural area though if you are an outdoors person. I believe Sullivan County is the second least populated county in the entire state of Pa. behind Forest County. There are only a few very small towns that make up the entire county, Dushore being the largest, and that's a tiny town itself! It's way to rural for my liking.

Wrong. The Sullivan Review is printed in Towanda, at the Towanda Printing Company; headquarters are in the old firehouse at Main and Water in Dushore. Comes out Tuesday nights. The newspaper has a gossip columnist in each town, who reports on the happenings that otherwise wouldn't make it to public view.

Anyhoo.. If it's 38 and raining in Dushore; it's 28 and snowing and Lopez; and Red Rock is encased with ice. That road is brutal in the winter, from Murraytown to the base of the mountain. Ice storms are always the worst, it's always ten to fifteen degrees cooler in Lopez. In June, I went on an ambulance call in Lopez, I was in shorts, it was 66 in Mildred. It was 42 in Lopez... and cold cold cold. It's at the intersection of three valley's, and two creeks headwater there, I attribute that to it's coldness. It's like a bowl, the air just goes round and round. Takes about 45min. to drive from center city Lopez, to the Geisinger Wyoming Valley.. in the summer. Just to give an idea of commute. Dunno about the winter, I refuse to go down the mountain if the roads are bad.
