Thanks in advance.

My wife and I are looking at potentially purchasing a vacation home that we could also rent weekly when not in use. Looking for suggestions for locations that will be good for our family with close location for skiing, hiking, etc, but also a popular area that will rent out occasionally when we are not using. Specifically looking for town/city names so that we can do realtor searches.

The Glen at Tamiment - nice, safe community that is private, yet near everything! It is located in Tamiment, PA ( formerly Bushkill, PA)

We have a home there and just love it! Some neighbors do rent out and they take in around $1100/week or $200/night.

Good luck!

Any of the lake developments... Arrowhead Lakes, Locust Lake Village, Lake Naomi, Big Bass Lakes.
They are mostly located in Pocono Lake area. There are a few near Lake Wallenpaupack, as well.

Definitely Lake Naomi...Locust Lake Village is nice too, both off of route 940, however Locust Lake does
not have a pool and a lot of renters would want that. Lake Naomi has a huge pool, several beaches,
a beautiful lake, and a beautiful indoor pool/recreation facility (which comes in handy if you rent in the
winter). they are both not far from Jack Frost Mt. for skiing....Good luck

Tanglewood has skiing in the winter and the lake (Wallenpaupack) in the summer. Mast hope has skiing and a small lake, but it also has things like horseback riding. Woodloch springs has a wonderful golf course and is close to skiing in Mast hope, or Lake wallenpaupack. I think it has access to a small lake. Tanglewood is in Hawley. Woodloch is in Bohemia, (15 mins from Hawley on 590 east) and Mast Hope is in Lackawaxen which is 25 mins from hawley (Also east on 590)

One thing to consider is fees. We don't rent our house, but you have to buy "renters badges" in order to let your renters use the facilities. I don't know if every place does this but you should ask when you are considering costs.

In WLE there is a fee to rent your house out. It goes by the weekend or annual.

Some of these communities have central sewer, but not water. All private wells, as far as I know.

You do have to be careful, and ask questions of your realtor. For example, Arrowhead Lakes and Stillwater Lakes both have central sewer, but both have sewer moratoriums in place, meaning there are no running of sewer lines or tapping into the sewer systems for the time being... so lot owners there are reverting back to probe/perc test to see if their lots can handle an on-lot system. Another issue facing lot owners in lake communities, is the presence/absence of wetlands.

None of this will affect you if you decide on an already existing home, but if you were planning on buying a lot and building that home, I wanted to give you some xtra info.

Might also do you some good to get in touch with a real estate agent that may have some expertise or general know-how on the pro's & con's of renting and what's involved...there's a member here on the boards who goes by the name KarenRice and she's knowledgeable about real estate...check with her if you can...you definitely don't want to rent out to riff-raff that might destroy your property
