This tour starts off near Exit 17 of I-84:

Rumor has it that this shopping plaza (was an Ames, then a bowling/fun center, both closed) which currently holds a Mr. Z's Market, Rite Aid, Radio Shack, etc. has been bought by Walmart and they are waiting for all the leases to expire. This rumor goes around Hamlin every few years, so time will tell if it is true.

Default Ahh - Hamlin!

Ok, I may be born and raised in Jersey, but Hamlin IS my second home, with family there that goes back to the '20's. So here's a piece of trivia for you...

The Fainting Goat was a home to the Savitz family for quite a long time. They used to have a small store in the back of the property, not much larger than a tool shed today, and I recall it having a pot-belly stove right in the middle of the store! My Dad used to tell us how he would have to walk there (about 2 miles down the Ledgedale Road) in the '30's for groceries, and as I was growing up in the 60's, it was a treat to go there for penny candy. My Dad also tells me that the house was orginally used as stopping point in days gone by when they used to have cattle drives. Now alas, it's gone commercial.

As far as the Walmart rumor goes, you're right, it keeps going back to that, and I hope you get something in that space that works for the area. I knjow everyone misses Ames, as it was handy not to have to travel to Honesdale or Scranton for those small things you need. Personally, I'd like to see a movie theater somewhere, but hey, that's just me.

The other store that I used to love as a kid was Randy's. It was that while house on the corner of 590 and 191 - the building cross from the CVS that I hear is getting knocked down to build a Rite-Aid. Randy's was where everyone stopped for the Sunday paper, and to get milk, and they had souvenirs and postcards that intrigued me as a child. And last but not least on my trivia was the Tasty-Freeze ice cream stand by the mall. That's been an on-again, off-again business which is now closed, and another I'd like to see opened. At least my kids always liked that too!

Thanks for the photos - I'll be in Hamlin this weekend as a matter of fact!!!

Great pictures Greentown, I'm sure you'll make Mr. Tudo happy!

OK, how many of you noticed the big MISTAKE in the sign printing on Rick Brinkman's Energy Supply's. That just drives me nuts!! And Kundla's is not to be missed. If you live anywhere with 100 miles, you should try it.
Yes, the Walmart rumor....I've lived here 13 yrs and I heard it way back then.
As far as a movie theatre, there is a small movie theatre sitting right inside the closed bowling alley, it was completed but never utilized when their application for a liquor license did not get approved. There was supposed to be a sports bar and movie theatre.
Rite-Aid is definitely going across from CVS, I've got my sources!
I do miss Ames too!

Be still my heart

What happened to the Pizza place across the street and about 1/4 mile up the road from the Hideout?

Really hoping to see a Hideabout soon

We love Hamlin and the area

Supplies... oops! Was I supposed to keep it a secret for other people to guess later on?

I'm guessing that was our local sign shop, he has a reputation for spelling errors...
Mr. Tudo, the pizzaplace is still there, just had a grand opening, I don't know if the owners changed, but it is now called Backdraft, a fireman thing...
I don't know when you have been here last, but a big extension has been added so it is 90 % bar/night club. Pizza is the best its ever been with all the different cooks and owners. Might almost be as good as NY pizza!!
Oh..and The Hideabout is on it's way, I was a little late in mailing it!
Good Luck!

Thank you "I Love PA"!

Far as the Pizza goes though, I hope it doesn't get like NY Pizza. Everybody knows that the best pizza comes from New Jersey

OK, I won't argue with you if you say Jersey pizza is best, just don't try and tell me Old Forge Pizza is the best...
Maybe if it wasn't american cheese, or imitation cheese

Thank God I'm not the only guy from NEPA who does not like Old Forge pizza! It's just so cheaply-made, in my opinion, that I don't know why the locals rant and rave about it so much.
