Hi, I will be moving to NEPA this summer and I need advice on what areas to look at to live in. My main concern is for my son who is biracial - half white, half black. I am originally from NEPA but haven't lived there in more than 15 years and when I lived there - the people of my community were not very accepting of black people. I would greatly appreciate any advice of areas to live that are clean and nice, that are diverse and have great schools. Also, please give me places to avoid. Thank you SO much!

NEPA is a very large area. It would help if you gave us some idea of where you need to be.

Ok. That helps. I am currently in Monroe country,But i know of Clarks Summit. I really am not sure how it is up there now. Used to be the expensive area to live and the snooty people lived there. Now, i could not tell you.

Clarks Summit is very pretty, as is Waverly. Not familiar with Old Forge except I hate Old Forge pizza. lol

Old Forge is a blue-collar town, largely elderly, and largely white (if that really matters). Beyond the "old-timers" I don't believe anyone would give your son a difficult time for being bi-racial. I mean, our own president is bi-racial, so that really has had to have had a positive impact upon the way people view those of mixed race. I grew up and lived 22.5 of my 23.5 years just south of Old Forge in Pittston---another blue-collar town (albeit very run-down).

Wilkes-Barre probably has the highest per capita presence of African-Americans in the area (outside of some pockets of Monroe County), but the commute to Clarks Summit could get old everyday. From Old Forge you have an easy "back way" commute up Keyser Avenue to the Morgan Highway to Clarks Summit---about 20 minutes each way.
