We've been looking around the poconos and saw a log home in East Stroudsburg area by Marshall Creek. It's not in a development but a few miles off 209. I think off 402 if I remember correctly.
We really love the house and all the things to do around the Poconos but you guys are really confusing me. Some say it's great others say it's a hell hole. What's up with this. Is it really bad or are some people just mad about the NY?NJ people coming in.
I'm really mixed up. Can someone give me some truthful answers here.
Thanks,
Lorraine

We looked in Pike and Monroe a few years ago and spent 5 seasons in Tannersville area.

Its whatever you like ; we like country, rural and not a lot of fuss. But its a vacation home so its a different thing. If we were to move full time, we would like a bigger home with more land. We are in Wayne county and its gorgeous. it is our paradise

You know we love the area. The house is perfect, nestled in the trees with about 1.5 acres of woods.
I'm just so concerned about the crime I keep hearing about. I don't want to be afraid to run to the store if it's dark out.
I'm from NYC originally so it's not like I'm a weenie (Lol), but I'm moving here from VA not to be around that.

That's the question that gets contradictory answers here. There are some who would argue that the "crime" is no better or worse than anywhere else. There are some who wouldn't move to the Poconos if they were paid. Of course, there are areas that are not good and from what I've read on here, it's pretty much the gated communities that seem to have a bad name. And once again, that's a pro/con situation depending on who answers. Every answer you receive will be "truthful" based on the responder's perception.

Would you be comfortable coming to the area for a week or a weekend and actually observing for yourself how you fit in the neighborhood? That's what I'd suggest.

One item you do have to consider when moving to that area is that on weekends the traffic can be a nightmare due to the flea market on Rt. 209...since the road is only 2 lanes you will spend a great amount of time waiting to get to downtown Stroudsburg...there are some backroads but you'll need to learn them from someone so you can avoid the headaches I mention above...I live south of the Pocono's in Saylorsburg so I don't have too many headaches in my area...just the kid's on weekends when the weathers good riding around on 4-wheeler's but even that is not often...I would recommend you spend a few weekends up here first before buying so you get the feel of the area...and see for yourself...good luck...

My husband and I lived in a gated community for 5 five years. We never had any problems there. It's always the bad experiences that get highlighted. The area off 402 is lovely. We had friends that lived out that way, and they never had any problems. If you can afford to live outside of a community, I would definitely do that. Community politics are as bad as national politics. If you are ready for the move, I say go for it. The crime, in my opinion, has been over-talked. Best of luck.
