Anyone know what the new building going up off Old Keene Mill in Springfield is going to be? It's just off the mixing bowl by the Plaza. Just curious- the area could benefit from some re-development, for sure...

I read in the newspaper that the apartments by the plaza are also going to be rebuilt/redesigned.

Default That whole area near the Springfield Mall is terrible

I remember when Springfield was the place to be. Now it has gone down hill like crazy and I wonder why? The mall reminds me of being in Los Angeles. It seems like there are always reports about a shooting, an illegal immigrant raid or a drug arrest. The area next to the big Kmart near where the Hotel is going up is full of abandoned buildings and huge unused parking lots. What a mess.

This site should be operational soon; it will describe the plans the new owners have for Springfield Mall. They are very impressive:

I believe I saw it in The Springfield Times. According to the article, those apartments are pretty worn out - some don't even have central air! The plan is to rebuild/redesign the apartments in stages. One section at a time.

Are you referring to that enormous building that you can see from I-95? If so, It is the new home of the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency. It is being build on what used to be the Fort Belvoir Proving Ground (now referred to Fort Belvoir North). It is being constructed at part of that huge BRAC plan. You can read more about it and view construction photos at: https://www1.nga.mil/About/nce/Pages/default.aspx

This was asked over 2 years ago. I think the op was referring to a hotel that was built.
