Hello, I am relocating to the NOVA area very soon. I have a job offer in Reston and I'm debating on where to live. I've found a great place to live in West Fairfax as well as South Arlington. I know that the commute from Fairfax to Reston would be much quicker, but I really like South Arlington. The place in Arlington is very convenient as far as amenities and being close to DC. Can anyone with experience commuting from Arlington to Reston give me some advice? What hours do you work and how long is your commute? Also, I would like to avoid the toll road if possible. How much longer does that add to the commute? Thanks!

Easy peasy, in my experience!

I lived in Crystal City and commuted to Reston for about 4 months. I hopped on 110 to 66 to the toll road and other than a short backup at the ballston on ramp each morning (added less than 5 minutes to the commute most days), it was a very painless drive.

The evening commute was worse than the morning commute, but it still wasn't bad. I'm not sure how the construction going on now is throwing a wrench into it though. My experience was a couple years ago.

Edit: Just saw you wanted to avoid the toll road. Not worth it, in my opinion. I took 7 a couple times to try to save a few bucks, and when I did the calculation I wasn't saving anything. I sat in so much traffic that I wasted time and gas at the lights, and it probably took at least 20 minutes longer to go that way.

Thanks for the info! On average, about how long did it take you to get from Crystal City to Reston every day?

Under 40 minutes. I would leave my house at 7:15 and be at my desk by 8. Afternoons was closer to an hour, if I recall.

Again though, they're doing construction in that area now--so it may be worse, I'm not sure.
