I am new to the area and I have started dating someone who doesn't live in the northern Virginia area. Whenever he comes to visit he wants to go out and do things but I really don't know any go places to visit in the area.
He is older than me so sometimes it hard for me to come up with things that a 28 year old would like to do in a area I am so unfamiliar with.

If you have any suggestions about things we could do in the area, restaurants, events, places to visit, just things to do in general it would be greatly appreciated.

Gosh, there are so many things to do around here. Date or no date =).

Check out DC eating scenes. There are so many restaurants and nightlife. You can grab dinner in Georgetown, walk around the area after dinner, and then grab a drink or two at one the bars. Dupont area is another good choice.

K-St area if you are interested in a night-out at the clubs/lounges.

Look into the washingtonian for weekend events as well.

What kind of stuff are you looking for? There are zillions of things.

My favorite dates are activities

Kayak the potomac: Jack's Boathouse - Washington, DC
Walk or bike along the C&O canal: The C&O Canal Bicycling Guide - Welcome!
Hike Great Falls: Great Falls Park (U.S. National Park Service)

There are dozens of awesome museums, in addition to all the ones on the mall:
National Building Museum: National Building Museum
Spy Museum: INTERNATIONAL SPY MUSEUM
Newseum: Newseum | Newseum Home
Mount Vernon: George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens

Lots of theater options as well:
DC Theatre Scene

Sporting events at the verizon center, nationals park, or RFK stadium

There are half price tickets to all sorts of neat things (many I didn't even know existed) here: https://www.goldstar.com/ I bought tickets to Avenue Q for next week for $45 (inclusive of fees). The theater itself has the same ones for $80! It's my new favorite site for activities.

Also, through labor day Rosslyn is continuing their free Friday night outdoor movies. I've had a lot of fun at the shows I've been to there! (I even brought my dog once, and she was welcome on my blanket )

Rosslyn Outdoor Film Festival 2010

Any of the free music nights-Herndon Friday night live, Broadlands live (once per month), Landowne and Brambleton have free music nights, the Belmont Concert series. There's also Wolftrap, Nissan Pavilian (sorry-refuse to call it Jiffy Lube Live...), Merriweather post.

Baseball (Nationals, Orioles, Bowie Baysox, Frederick Keys and the one in PW County).

Football (Redskins, Ravens).

Trips to Baltimore, Annapolis, Old Town Alexandria, Georgetown.

Hike the Appalachian Trail, C&O Canal, any one of many, many walking trails.

Picnic in the park under the National Airport runway, take a boat trip up or down the Potomac.

Visit Maine Avenue fish market for the ambiance and take in a nice dinner at Phillips.

Walk the national mall, visit the museums. Go to the zoo.

There is SO MUCH to do!

Some simpler dates:

Old Town, Alexandria - great for an afternoon of just walking around, eating lunch; also great for an evening of walking around, eating dinner. Lots of stuff to look at, lots of people, some clubs and live music if you like that kind of thing, lots of restaurants, street performers, etc.

Arlington Draft House - a movie date, but cooler. You sit at a table and can order snacks and beer during the movie.

For local fairs and festivals (there is often something going on on the weekend) you can look at Virginia Is For Lovers - Vacation in Virginia - Beaches, Mountains, History and More, or check the fairfax city website or wherever you live. Also, I often find interesting things listed in my local newspapers (like the Fairfax Connection) - see if you have a local paper.

Dulles Expo Center also has interesting things - you can see what's going on at their website.
