Commute from Gainesville to Herndon? (Manassas, Fairfax: construction, farms, car)

I am considering a new job and wondering what the driving commute is like during rush hour from Gainesville to Herndon?

Herndon borders several areas so it would be helpful to know where exactly in Herndon is your destination.

If you take the main routes and highway, I am assuming that you're taking 66E to 28N and enter Herndon via Rte 28 or get on the Toll Rd 267E, right?
However, depending where you are in Gainesville, you might be able to take some "shortcuts". There's one through Manassas that would put you on Rte 28 in Herndon:

* Rte 66E
* Exit Rte 234N Sulley Rd. Continue north past the Manassas Battlefield.
* There will be a "Y" in the road. Veer right to Rte 659 Gum Spring Road. Stay straight; crossover Rte 29 and continue straight.
* At the light, turn right on Rte 50 South. You'll on be on this for 2-3 miles.
* Turn left (north) on Rte 606 Old Ox Road. This road will take you straight into Herndon. Or you can exit onto Rte 28 if needed.

It sounds a little complicated but it really isn't. There's been alot of construction back there lately, especially in the Aldie area. There used to be alot of forests and fields but I'm sure it's changed. And Rte 50 will probably be bumper-to-bumper.

I've never traveled on this during rush hour but I am guessing 1 -1 1/2 hrs depending on traffic congestion and the weather? And contingent, of course, to what time you leave in the a.m. Good luck!

1.5 hours- yikes! Mapquest says 30 mins but I know that is BS because of traffic. I was hoping for more like 45 mins. I am not familiar with Herndon but the address is on the Herndon Parkway (near intersection with 7100). I currently commute to dc on VRE and don't much like driving but I would consider it if were relatively painless. I am not sensing that that is the case.

Yes, Mapquest gives you an ideal driving time because it doesn't factor in traffic, only distance.

You can reach Herndon Pkwy via the route I gave you. Granted, depending where you are in Gainesville, there are probably some other shortcut suggestions so maybe folks commuting from there will chime in. 45 minutes to 1 hr is very possible depending what time you leave in the morning. Early enough and you could do it. I only mentioned 1.5 hrs as an extreme -- that is, with traffic jams on Rte 66, toll road and rte 28, bad car accidents, thunderstorms, etc. Good luck!

I wouldn't recommend that way. My husband works off 28/Sunrise Valley and if he leaves before 7:00 it generally takes 40 minutes. Now this is summer traffic and given the location of your office you might find it easier to avoid 28 and just take 66 to Fairfax county parkway past the Toll rd. FFX County parkway generally backs up starting just past Franklin Farms and depending on what time you leave you could be looking at either 30-50 minutes on 66. He has also gone Lee Highway to Stone Rd and thru Westfields when there were accidents. I would count on an hour unless you leave really early.
