Going to the Outer Banks and trying to decide if I should leave Friday or Saturday morning? Or does it not really matter? Thanks for any advice.

Friday will be the better day but I can tell you that over the last 2 weeks traffic on I95 has gotten substantially better. It probably won't matter too much.

I highly recommend Friday morning or leave very early on Saturday morning. I-95S in NOVA is somewhat better after Labor Day.

We left Ashburn on a Saturday morning around 10am and had no problems at all BUT that was first or second weekend in June when school was still in session so...BUT I can tell you coming home we left Corolla at 8am on Saturday and it was AWFUL. We should have left late in the evening on Friday. NEVER again!

Last time I did the drive to NC (didn't go to the Outer Banks but did go to the border) - the Fri. a.m. drive wasn't bad at all - might as well go then and get another day in.

When we've made the outerbanks trip, we always leave on Saturday (our house rental has always been Sat-Sat). If we leave before 7 am, we've managed to fly all the way down. If we don't leave until 9, traffic is much worse. This has been in July though, which is peak season.

Thanks for the replies and great information. We'll be in the Corolla area, too, so the advice on the return trip is very helpful.

well we left for Corolla on Friday at 3 PM in late June and it was a nightmare...though i have to say 95 was NOT the issue, but all the other roads we had to take - and of course I can't recall the routes. We stayed in Chesapeake overnight and it took 6+ hours to get there, should have been a 4 hour ride for us. Left at about 9:30 Am to Corolla and had no problems whatsoever getting down there in about 2 hours.

We left Corolla at about 9:00 or so, made a few stops, and headed home, traffic was slow, but not horrible. Took us about 6.5 hours to get to Round Hill, not including our stop for lunch.

IF I were doing it again, I might leave early Saturday morning...not sure it was worth it to leave on Friday night since we had such a bear of a drive.

I would think you will have a different experience because it's solidly off season, now, but I'd still be wary of Friday afternoon traffic.
