Here's a link to the Metro map, if you haven't seen it. It's about a half hour ride from Vienna to Farragut West.

Can you give me a idea of how long it would take him to get to DC from say Gainesville driving to the metro and taking the metro in. I pulled up mapquest and it says that its 37 miles from downtown DC. Thank you in advance.
Metro would take care of about the last 15 miles. Many (but not all) employers will pick up a good chunk of the fare, but none of the parking. At the moment, that's $3.75 a day. Once the train pulls out, it's about 30 minutes to the K Street area, another 10 minutes or so if you have to go over to Capitol Hill. The drive from Gainesville to Vienna would be mostly on I-66, and that can get pretty nasty once you pick up all the traffic doing the same thing coming out of the Manassas and Centreville areas. All in all, I'd say you'd be looking at an hour and a half or more unless you can shift your start time to early or late. Without the rush hour factor, you could probably do door-to-door in an hour, plus or minus...

Also finding parking at the Vienna metro can be tough (since it's the furthest out lots of people go in from there) Somedays it might be faster to just go to one of the Falls Church stations rather than spending 15-20 minutes looking for parking.

As Saganista said without rush hour it's an hour and you can take 66 all the way in. But during rush hour 66 is HOV only inside the beltway. (something most people from out of town don't realise...it looks like such a simple commute on the map!)

That might work with West Falls Church, but East Falls Church has a tiny surface parking lot that fills up early.

Yeah, East Fall Church has 400 spaces. By comparison, West Falls Church has 2,000, Dunn Loring has 1,300, and Vienna has 5,800 (but they do go quickly).
