When I lived in Huntington (just south of Alexandria), at least one helicopter would fly over our building every few days. I assumed it had something to do with Reagan/National and/or the Pentagon. Oddly, it didn't happen at all that I can recall in 2008.. it seemed to start around Dec. '08/Jan. '09 (and was ongoing when we moved out in May of this year). Oh, and I never noticed them in College Park, MD (where I lived before Huntington); haven't heard them in Fairfax City, either.

OH yeah! When we lived in Vienna we were close to rt66 and the beltway. Helicopters hovered during rush hours, morning and evening, to report traffic on radio and television. It was awful, especially the noise in early morning. I'd forgotten about it since I haven't heard any helicopters or sirens since I moved to western Loudoun. VERY peaceful! Sorry that you have to deal with that very annoying noise.

If it is one copter flying over the same area, it is probably the Fairfax police. I live in south Fairfax and see them doing the loop all the time. Unfortunately, there are lots of different reasons for the high amount of helicopter traffic in the area. As for rules as to when they can be out, nope cause the vast majority are on 'official' government business. There may be some rules restricting private chopper traffic, but not government choppers.

A copter or some other aircraft was flying over my home in the Annandale area one day (not at night) this past week and was so low that the house rattled. Scared the #($& out of me and my dog. Better have caught that suspect!

I was outside with my family last week and a helicopter was circling above our neighborhood for a good 10 minutes. Around and around, flying sideways (with the door facing the ground), almost directly over where we were sitting.. which was on a playground. It was cool at first, then just a little scary thinking about what they might be looking for exactly. It was too bright to see what type of chopper. We are in 22150.. from what I read not the *best* area.

For those complaining. Will you complain if a loved one needs immediate transport to a trauma unit and a chopper is called to take them?
