Hi,
I just bought a new car in MD. As I was riding it today, I noticed that it did not have 1) a property tax sticker and 2) inspection sticker. I know they added tax and title when I got the car.

I am in arlington. What's the procedure for getting these? Is the dealer going to notify VA and I'll get the stuff in the mail. Do i have to wait until I get my plates? Any other tips? Possible to wait til last minute so I have a smaller property tax hit?

I bought a new car in MD and live in Fairfax County, so I can tell you what my experience was. You will be responsible for registering for the Property tax. They ask for the purchase date of the car, so waiting won't decrease your tax bill.

The MD dealership took taxes out on my purchase as well. About three weeks later, they sent me a check made out to the VA dmv in the amount of the taxes along with the other paperwork (Certificate of Origin, etc) needed to title/register the car in VA and get VA plates.

You will still need to get a safety inspection done, but you should be able to get away with not doing emissions testing with the new car's certificate of origin.

Don't confuse sales tax with property tax.

My advice would be to contact the dealer. They should have explained everything about their process for registering the car in Virginia, and what you could expect. When I bought a new car in VA, the dealership gave me a temporary registration, along with the temp paper tags, and explained what I would be getting in the mail.
