I signed up for beginner hockey and evidently need some equipment for the first class (I had this silly idea that we could wait to buy equipment). Is there something similar to Play It Again sports in Arlington/Alexandria? Any tips on where to find good prices if there is not a used sports store. Also, is all hockey gear built for men? Thanks.

No idea about used equipment, but no, all hockey gear is not built for men. There is women-specific stuff out there. Don't know how much luck you'll have finding it used, though, as hockey is still predominantly played by men.

There used to be a Play it Again Sports in Falls Church on Route 7 @ Haycock (by the Giant). There's one in Leesburg if you're in that direction.

My husband plays in a roller hockey league. We furnished his gear through a combination of Craigslist and a trip to the play it again sports in leesburg. (Bonus--the trip gave me an excuse to stop at the outlets
)

Thanks for the replies. I'll have to take a look at Craigslist and hopefully find some good deals online. Ay ya yi. I visited the Kettler Iceplex Pro Shop and purchased the very important equipment that should be new anyway - helmet, stick, pelvic protector. I had the skates already. It might be pretty expensive, and I hope my Craiglist searches are successful. Nonetheless, I am very excited.
