I've got that week off and I'm thinking about getting out of town. Any ideas?

Nothing too exotic but would consider Canada, Caribbean, Bermuda, Mexico or just something relatively "local" like Outer Banks, NYC, Boston. Older couple, no kids. So I'm not looking to mountain climb or visit Mickey and his friends

I don't know if you're interested in Vermont, but that's where I'm going!
My uncle lives there and I usually go with my dad and his wife for Thanksgiving.

How about Cape May, New Jersey? A quaint Victorian B&B? A nice inn for dinner. Stroll along the streets. Visit the lighthouse, walk along the beach, take the ferry home (and avoid I-95 at the same time). For more nightlife, drive up to Atlantic City for the night. Cape May is nice any time of year. It's one of my favorite places.

Okay, travel is one of my favorite topics, so here's another idea, especially since you mentioned Canada. One year we drove up to Quebec and Montreal in mid-October. We had such a pheomenal vacation. It was hard to believe we were still in North America - and just an 11-13 hour drive away. We enjoyed the cobblestoned streets of Quebec City and the city nightlife of Montreal. The weather was still warm enough to stroll the streets of the city. The French language spoken, the different money, and the Canadian signage added a nice foreign "exotic" element to our trip.

We stayed at a nice B&B in Quebec City and a traditional hotel in Montreal. Because it is not "in" season, it wasn't too expensive or crowded. There are plenty of sites to see in Montreal, and a lot of flavor to drink in in Quebec City. It was a great vacation!

If you've never really "done DC as a tourist" why not stay at a fancy hotel in the city, and do all the things tourists do. Hit every Smithsonian, go see Shear Madness at the Kennedy Center, have dinner at Coco Sala, go to the zoo at sunrise to hear the monkeys singing, etc.

If you want to leave the area, Thanksgiving can be a nice time to hit the nearby beach resorts, too. Hurricane season is mostly over, and the summer crowds are gone. Of course, lots of the restaurants are closed, too.

Also, the cruise idea's a good one. I was just talking to our travel agent and she was telling me about a pretty good deal on a cruise to the Western Carribean (Grand Caymans, Cozumel, etc.). This one happened to be the week after Thanksgiving, but they have them Thanksgiving week, too. if a cruise sounds appealling to you I'd check and see if there are any lines that have a deal you like.

Be aware that many families take cruises during Thanksgiving week because the kids have time off school and they feel a cruise ship is a safe place to let them run around. We're talking lots and LOTS of kids. Whether or not that's a great thing is up to you.

Not to hijack this topic too much, but I'm looking to vacation in the spring and interested in Quebec and have never been there. Would you also recommend it for a family trip? (two kids, 11 and 9) Thanks.

Default thanks for the great replies

Keep em coming. I like them all so far. We've done about all the usual tourist things in D.C. although I'm sure we've missed some. Never been on a cruise so that's something to think about. I like the idea of Montreal in November (shouldn't be crowded, I wouldn't think).

We went on a cruise the week of Thanksgiving a few years ago. We went on a 5 day to Cozumel, Key West and Belize. It was a great time. I have been on a few cruises and have always enjoyed them.

Last time we travelled during the Thanksgiving holidays it took us 12 hours to get home from New York. Never again. This was around 1981 or so. We've stayed home ever since on the major holidays.
