Looking for a place that would have experience dealing with Nikons. Ideally, a local shop. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Try asking Fuller and d'Albert in Fairfax. They sell photographic and darkroom equipment, and if they don't do repairs, they have been serving area photographers for many, many years and probably know who's who in the local business.

As an alternative to the above post, you can try Penn Camera. There's one right by Springfield Mall. I don't think they repair the cameras themselves though. I think they simply just ship the camera to the respective repair center, which, of course, you can do yourself. I have canon cameras and I've sent many cameras and lenses to Canon repair center without any problem. I would expect the same is true for Nikon.

If the camera is still under warranty and you have proof of purchase and/or warranty card, you should try calling their customer service and have them send you a pre-paid label so you don't have to pay for shipping ur camera to them.

There are multiple Penn Camera locations in the area, and they're a pretty good store to deal with (they sponsor several local photography events). They work with all major camera brands:

If you want to head out towards Ashburn, there is Ace Photo - although for some reason their website isn't working for me right now:
Ace Photo

I've never had to have one of my camera bodies or lenses repaired, but I think most shops will ship your camera to a repair center for anything more than simple fixes, as need_more_light mentioned.
