Thanks to a thread last week, I started researching MS-13 activity in the area and was surprised to learn how prevalent it was in Alexandria. When three members committed a brutal rape last year, the city failed to report it to the media for several days. It's possible that efforts to downplay gang activity have played a role in this lack of awareness. 3 MS-13 members arrested in Alexandria rape, police say - washingtonpost.com

Here's an article about a recent MS-13 shootout with a rival gang. MS-13 Gang Leader Pleads Guilty to Racketeering Offenses Including the Murder of a Witness

In yet another instance last year, MS-13 members killed a pimp in Alexandria. Crime Scene - MS-13 member gets 20 years in Alexandria slaying

This is all recent, and it's just from a cursory Google search.

Next time you visit the town, remember to duck. Yikes.

The first crime involved two Fairfax County men and one from the City of Alexandria sexually assaulting someone in a vacant apartment. The second involved a shootout with a number of Marylanders, and the third involved a pimp.

These are all heinous crimes, and clearly MS-13 is active in the DC area, but what exactly does this have to do with visitors to Alexandria? Most visitors will not be socializing with pimps or in vacant apartments.

And how about that MS-13 machete attack in Merrifield? Scaary place.

MS-13 Member Found Guilty in Fairfax Machete Attack - washingtonpost.com

Duck in Springfield, too.

Crime Scene - MS-13 member gets life sentence for murder of rival Fairfax gang member

Shootouts in Sterling and Reston, darn, there goes the neighborhood.

MS-13 Gang Member Receives 60 Year Sentence for Multiple Shootings - Fairfax News

An honest, no-spin discussion of MS-13 in our area would be titled "MS-13 in NOVA". And a cursory Google search reveals that most of the gang's reported NOVA activity has taken place in Fairfax County.

I recall hearing about that first incident in the news. I admit to being perplexed as well about why the police didn't disclose the information right away.

That second link wasn't actually to a recent incident but refers to several incidents that occurred up to January 2005. It was the sentencing that was relatively current (September 2010).

There's no disputing the third link.

What all three incidents - and most gang activity in this area - have in common is that they occur within other rival factions and other groups that are interested in breaking the law. I can see how a lower-income/working-class Hispanic male teenager or younger adult could find it tough to negotiate one's way through the day.

All of that said, as someone who has lived in both the much-heralded Old Town and the much-maligned Route 1 area in "South" Alexandria, I've never encountered any direct or indirect activity with MS-13 or similar gangs. It probably "helps" that I don't fit the profile that they're most likely to interact with.

Some areas in Alexandria may warrant more precaution than others...but it is not the Wild Wild West. No need to "hide your kids, hide your wife...(or) hide your husbands" either.

I'm thinking only big babies would let such isolated stories keep them cowering at home at night or prompt them to Google every reference to MS-13 in the area over the past decade.

Me, I think I'll still go to the Birchmere, even though it's close to Arlandria, and to Peking Gourmet and Duangrat's, even though they are in the heart of scary, scary Culmore. Hell, I may even keep riding my bike on the W&OD trail through Sterling just to live dangerously.

I petition for consideration of the use of the singular rather than the plural!

NoVa wants to maintain the clean image that it has, so they'll do anything to not publicize these type of things, even though there is indeed a gang problem.

Please - if anything, such incidents (which, in the vast majority of situations, involve gang-on-gang violence) get far more publicity in NoVa than a similar act of violence in DC or PG receives.
