OK everyone, that's enough with the obscure references to belief systems. Back to topic, please.

LOL, I wish someone would put a fur coat over those poor lingerie mannequins today. Not that I'm a prude.... it's just too cold to be wearing nothin' but a nightie.

It's supposed to refer to a strong, organized effort by local residents to prevent something from being built in their town. People who organize to stop a freeway from being built through their local park, for example.

Lately this term has been misused and watered down so much that it's become meaningless. If a single person writes a comment on a blog, someone else with a different opinion starts accusing the first guy of NIMBYism. And often an entire town is accused of NIMBYism if a single resident objects to a project. That's one reason I personally think it's a term mostly used for bullying purposes. IMO, of course.

And, as others have pointed out, it's become a publicity tool. If you want to drum up a lot of publicity for your new store, stage a faux outrage. Shout "Nimby! Nimby!" and you'll get lots of attention.

There was a funny article about this store in the Loudoun Times yesterday. The writer points out that sales receipts are the true measure of what a community thinks about store. A few protestors may claim they represent the community, but apparently sales have been really strong. Shoppers come from the local community, and there have been hundreds of them, so that seems to prove the local residents don't mind having the store there.

LOL this store came up for discussion again this morning at my little community coffee klatsche. Apparently the merchants on King Street are now really happy with the lingerie store. Pedestrian foot traffic is up.

i've lived 10 minutes walking distance from Old Town Leesburg for 23 years and I honestly can't believe so many people are up tight about this.

Actually, I can. It is Leesburg afterall but it doesn't bother me one bit.
