So, any tips on finding the least expensive place to rent near Chantilly without a really bad commute?

If he manages to get the job we will still be paying an $800 mortgage in another state until we sell our house - which we are well aware that that could take a while.

We have 2 kids and a 3rd on the way. What are the rules for how many people per bedroom there? Hubby thinks he could get away with a 2 bedroom for a while. Is that even likely?

If we managed to rent a 2 bedroom; how long would they allow us to stay there with our 3rd child? I know some places where I used to live would give you 6 months or 1 year with a baby, until you are forced to move to a bigger place.

I can say personally, I'd rather just rent a 3 bedroom, but hubby wants to save more money - though I might get driven batty with so little space. Anyway...

Any information would be much appreciated.

EDIT:
Also, any tips as to where the bad neighborhoods are so we can avoid them?

I don't care about the schools nearby as I am going to be homeschooling and of course that means I'm a SAHM.

Budget probably maxes out around $1400. Might be possible that this could go up to 1500-1600 if needed to avoid a bad neighborhood and depended exactly how much they give him for the job. He'd probably be offered around $60,000 a year though.

So, lets say - Centreville, Chantilly, Herndon, or Fairfax for potential locations. Now, what neighborhoods do I really need to avoid, what price am I really looking at for a decent (low crime area/not falling apart) place with w/d hookups or w/d included? How many people per bedroom allowed as far as you all know and what kind of commute are we talking?

Thanks!

What is your budget? I can give you the least expensive places to live but they will be in the worst neighborhoods in the area. A range would allow us to help you more.

Our budget probably would max out at 1300-1400 if we HAD to.

Would that range move up if you sold your old place?

Yes, it could. Probably move up to like 1600 to 1800 if needed.

I just did a quick search for 2 or 3 bedroom apartments or TH in Chantilly itself and didn't find anything in your budget.

Looks like you might find something in Herndon or Centreville though.

You could probably get a 3 bedroom townhouse in Ashburn for 1600-1800 (not including utilities). Commute to Chantilly is between 20 and 35 minutes on average days.

Oh, if you up your budget to the $1600-1800 you could get a place in Chantilly... I know I rented out a three bedroom TH for 1600 before...

Are you sure about that? I live in Chantilly and my commute to Chantilly where I work is at least 20 minutes - even when there's not much traffic.

I've made it from Ashburn Farm to the intersection of Route 28 and Route 50 in 15 minutes before (one time in 10 years-all the lights were green and no traffic that day-exciting enough I posted about it on Facebook.). Mostly it takes 25-30 minutes, unless 28 is backed up.
