I think you are better off in MD. Decent 1 beds start at $1100 on the VA side. There are places in MD to avoid (do NOT ask NoVA folks what they are) but you have a better chance of finding a decent place in your price range there. Ones I would start with are Upper Marlboro, Fort Washington, or Clinton even though they are more known for single family homes.

I got one for you. It is in the Fairfax County part of Alexandria called Riverside Apartments. I have a few co-workers that live/have lived over there and they really liked it. It also just over the bridge so the commute wouldn't be bad at all. Check it out:
