I currently live in DC but I'm interested in moving to Northern VA. I have an office in Bethesda and an office in Glen Burnie. I wouldn't mind a 55 mile ride each way once or twice per week to Glen Burnie so living in NOVA wouldn't be a big deal. There is also a chance I'll be working in Rockville if I decide to switch jobs. With that said, I prefer VA to MD which is why I've decided to look at houses. What towns in NOVA would offer a decent commute to Bethesda/Rockville and offer me the best bang for my buck regarding housing? I like Reston, Great Falls, and McLean but realize those may not be the best options for a single income person. I make great money but I'd be priced out of a 1 million house unless I was married. Any feedback of a nice town in NOVA that would provide a 20 mile or less commute to Bethesda that is somewhat affordable?

What are you looking for (SFH, condo, TH) and what is your budget?

Best towns would be Bethesda or Rockville.

You may need to spent a million in Great Falls or McLean for a nice house, but Reston has lots of good options for much less. If you are looking in Reston, be sure to find a place that is close to the toll road and include the tolls in your budget.

I'm thinking a detached house or townhouse. I'm looking to spend up to 600k.

It depends on whether you continue to have a secondary commute to Glen Burnie. I would choose a location close to the primary place of business so you have a respite from the long commute. Grosvenor in North Bethesda would be relatively convenient to Rockville and Bethesda, especially if the Bethesda location is on the metro as is Grosvenor.

Anyone read the part about how he wants to buy in Virginia, not Maryland?

It means that people are trying to discourage him from doing so, especially as he throws in a suburb of Baltimore as a possible destination. Crossing the river adds several choke points to the commute. If it was only Rockville or Bethesda, I would suggest living within a mile of the Beltway, which would include Falls Church, Annandale, and Fairfax.

Yes, but that’s not realistic. I can’t think that anything we say will change his mind. OP should rent in MD and visit Virginia to scout out possible places to buy before making a decision..
