Due to an optical illusion, tonight's moon is supposed to look much bigger and brighter than usual. This could be a chance to snap some interesting shots of your favorite Nova skyline feature. Or maybe a shot of the moon over your favorite local sculpture?

Its not an optical illusion - the moon is actually closer to the earth during this period of time.

It looked cool, didn't it?

FM, you're absolutely right that the moon was closer to the Earth. The optical illusion part happens when the moon rises, around 8 p.m. and accentuates the whole effect. When it's low on the horizon, your eyes play tricks on you, making the moon appear even bigger. Last night it looked downright unreal.

The moon did look big around 8-9 pm, but when I looked out my window around midnight, it didn't even seem much larger to me at all. However this morning around 6am when it was setting, it looked large. It's just when it was white in the sky - didn't look any different. At 8pm it kind of looked like the big blood moon you sometimes see in the summer Kinda neat.

I didn't wake up early enough to see the big moon this morning, but I thought it looked unusually white and bright. I looked like Mother Nature was using PhotoShop.

NASA had a really cool photo of the moon over the Lincoln Memorial from the other night:
