So far...perhaps I missed the pros and cons of one vs. another gutter performance, is cost. I just want to know what is going to do the job. My gut tells me that the small mesh, (that would be leaf filter) may have a moss clogging problem. I have had gutter helmet. And you still had to have your gutters cleaned...not as often, but you did. I use my roof water for all my water needs. I do not have a water bill by collecting it. So this is the deal, no cost factor just want water to go into the gutters so I can collect it. Which one would you buy for yourself if your needs were like mine. Please do not say We are #1 that tells me nothing. I need someone who has had to deal with the gutter on their home.

We have LeafGuard - similar to some that you mentioned, I think - and some others with some kind of mesh cover. They don't work. They still get clogged and have to be cleaned and maintained. However, we can only get them serviced by the company that installed them, which is too expensive and difficult. We are planning to replace all the gutters with just the regular kind, and then get them cleaned regularly. It's not that expensive - maybe 100-150 a year for cleaning - and in spite of the advertising there doesn't seem to be a real maintenance-free gutter anyway.

If you're harvesting your rainwater for personal use, you do want a fine filter system. Anything that still lets debris in is going to get into your cistern or rain barrel, affecting the ph balance of the water as well as its clarity. All the other fitration steps you need to go through to get the water potable will be taxed more without starting the fitration at the water source-- your gutters.

I'd suggest you consider an all aluminum and stainless system. LeafFilter is made from PVC and that type of piping for water has been banned in states like Washington.

Also, regarding the comment about moss, it all starts with your roof. Do you have moss resistant shingles on your roof or a metal roof? If so, you're probably fine. Algae and moss feed off the limestone used in the shingle manufacturing process, so a moss resistant shingle will effect the water that flows onto the filter; the properties will kill the mold spores in the water (and may help preserve your gutters, look at the fine print about them as it relates to moss resistant shingles).

With an older shingle, moss spores will flow down to the gutter with rainwater, you can't stop it from happening. What you don't want happening is debris sitting on the gutter guard, particularly if the gutter guard sits flat like a shelf over the gutter, which both of these products do. Moss will start to form on the debris, which can wind up clogging the gutter guard.

Consider products like MasterShield or Klean Gutter, both of which are more current, high performing technology from the same inventor as LeafFilter. Both have strong yet flexible designs that pitch with the roof to avoid debris build up. They use airflow down the roof to shed debris more effectively, which means less maintenance to you. Check out MasterShield reviews from building specialists, specifically Ask the Builder and Handyman How To. MasterShield has the only interlocking panel as well wich may be of interest because your reusing the water, the others just butt the panels up side by side.

There are steps you can take with the installation of either product to help eliminate the moss spore issues as well.

Frankly speaking, all gutter guards will need some degree of maintenance at some point. If you buy into the marketing/sales messages alone, you'll never be satisfied with any product. How much maintenance and the frequency of it depends on the gutter guard technology/design and gets combined with the unique conditions that are found with the geographic location, roofing material, trees around and architectural design of the home. And a lot falls into the hands of the local installer, who will not be affiliated with the manufacturer; they're responsible for getting it in right and working. Don't make a decision on a snazzy salesman's sales pitch, the most important part of the job will be your installation.

Your needs are different than mine. My needs are keeping my gutters working so they don't overflow. Catchment is widely used in Hawaii, you might want to post a question on the Hawaii big island forum on how they design, use and maintain their water catchment systems. Another good source of info on catchment is PunaWeb. You should be able to do a search on PunaWeb without getting a login.

Default Review of LeafFilter

I have unfortunately used the LeafFiler North recently on 9/26/2013. Here is my review about this company:
I am greatly disappointed by the product and the company’s service. LeafFilter North has not completed what was promised in their contract.

1. Downspouts not cleaned and realigned. The contract specified they would clean and realign all downspouts. They attempted only one (1) of sixteen (16). Their website (Gutter Guards | LeafFilter) specifies that installation will include “Step 2: Clean and Realign Downspout.” After partially attempting to clean one downspout, they advised that the bottom was blocked and they simply didn’t continue. Their promise was not completed.

2. Homeowner Inspection Certificate not received. Their website specifies their final step is “We will walk the perimeter of your property along with you to inspect the completed work and to answer any question or concerns you may have. You will then receive our Homeowner Inspection Certificate that guarantees a satisfactory installation.” They did not complete this inspection with me so I did not get to approve the installation. I would not have approved if I had been given the chance. I have never received a Lifetime Transeferrabe Warranty

3. Subcontracted Company and no response to complaints. LeafFilter was not the company that came to install the product. I was never told that they would use another company to do the job. If I knew I would not hire them. I called the day of the installation to complain that the job had not been completed properly. My first call reached a LeafFilter salesman JB, but he hung up on me. My second call reached a regional manager. He promised that he would personally come to check the work. He did not show up at the scheduled appointment time. He called after the appointment time had passed to reschedule. He did not show up for that appointment either. There was no call, no explanation after that. LeafFilter North has not followed through on their promises.

4. Improper installation. The product was installed poorly in comparison to the workmanship promised on their website and promised by the salesman. There are gaps between the guard system and the roof. There is damage to the roof in several places. They made poorly measured cuts to the fascia board exposing the wood to the elements which will cause rot. Please see the attached are photos of the poor product installation on my property.

5. Product failure. The system has not worked. I’ve since found another customer complaint that echoes my experience: “I know the guarantee says "nothing but water" in the gutters, but it should say "Not even water" in the gutters.” (LeafFilter - Redmond, WA | Yelp) LeafFilter gives a “lifetime guarantee” but their installation was never completed properly so the system didn’t work from day one! The promises and claims of this product and the LeafFilter company have fallen short. Attached are photos that show how the leaves sit on top of the gutters to block the water get into the gutters.

I have come to the conclusion that I have spent $13,509.59 on a gutter system that was installed improperly by a company (through a subcontractor) that has not responded to my complaints. I am devastated to discover that the company, their product and their promises are fraudulent.

I think these fancy systems are mostly a waste of money, especially when I see how much they cost($13k!). Just get the regular cheap gutters and have them cleaned out a couple times a year. Having someone clean them is cheap and it's probably good to get a pair of eyes on them once in awhile to make sure your roof or anything else up there doesn't need any minor repairs. There's no such thing as set it & forget it with a house.

My gutters are on a steep sloped roof and I have trouble finding people to clean them. I have tried gutter screens, foam filters, and I am of the opinion there is no real good solution to the problem. I am waiting for some bright engineering student to come along with a self cleaning gutter.
I may not live long enough though.
