anyone else have wild onions or garlic in their yard? I thought they were weeds until i pulled them up and they had a bulb, and smelled like garlic. They're quite nice to smell and wondering if I can eat them.

I wouldn't recommend eating them. Do they have a purple flower? We had them when we lived in OH. Took a weed wacker to them..paid that lovely price. We were told the previous owner had planted them near a side door to keep out pests. Not sure what pests...

Since they had a veggie garden in the back as well, I think if they were edible they would have planted them there as well.

I know you're supposed to plant garlic beneath your rosebushes to help ward off the pests that prey on roses. I hear they keep pests away from a lot of other plants, too. Don't know if yours are edible or not. Dave at Merrifield Garden Center might know.

I wonder if it would keep stink bugs from flying into your house?

It will at least keep the vampires away.

Ha! It sure did the day I weedwacked 'em. The smell was in my hair, skin, clothes, it was horrible.

Speaking of stink bugs, I had one last week in the house...are those freaking things back already!

VRE332 - it is wild onion, and it certainly is edible, provided you haven't sprayed them with bug spray or weed killer or anything. They are a common "weed" around here, so I bet you aren't the only one in your neighborhood with it in your yard.

slduvall - yes, the stink bugs are back! I heard to expect larger numbers this year than last, believe it or not. I really hope the local government figures out how to control this pest. I bet once they start clogging the halls and offices of Congress, we'll see some federal attention to it.

They don't have much of a bug-repellent odor unless you cut the stalks or pull the bulb out of the ground. I wouldn't be surprised if they help keep rabbits away, once those bunnies start munching on it. (And it's not the bunnies themselves I don't want on my lawn, it's the bunny poop, which is quite irresistible to 4-legged companions.)
